Test Results of Three Poloidal Field Superconducting Samples in SULTAN

Abstract: Superconductors for the ITER Poloidal Field Coils are large cable-in-conduit conductors (CICC) made of NbTi strands encased in a round-in-square stainless steel jacket. Three prototype conductor sections for poloidal field coils PF1/6, PF2/3/4 and PF5 have been fabricated in collaboration of the domestic RF, CN and EU agencies and tested in SULTAN Test Facility at the nominal operating conditions. The test aimed to characterize the DC and AC behavior of the conductors. The DC test was focused on the current sha… Show more

“…This is a peculiarity of RF TF CICC and most probably occurs due to the unique strand layout and specific cabling procedure. The test results of the PF1&6 samples confirmed stability of the conductor electromagnetic properties before and after the cycling mechanical load [8].…”

“…The main dimensions of the samples are approximately the same. The results of the tests of all samples were sufficient and met ITER requirements [6][7][8]. However the results of the TF samples tests were quite unexpected because no current sharing temperature (T cs ) degradation was observed [6,7].…”

“…In other large NbTi CICC [6], unstable transition with is observed for current larger than 25 kA Trasek, stable transition is observed for current in excess of 90 kA although the current density and self-field gradient are much larger than in the ITER conductors. This excellent performance is partly due to the SnAg5 strand coating, which reduces the crossover resistance and promotes the inter-strand current sharing.…”

“…For the measurements of RRR of strands taken from PFEU1 conductor sample [6] tested in the SULTAN, the strand samples were selected not only in different areas from the viewpoint of the magnetic field -high field zone (external field 6.4T) and low-field zone (external field 0.4T), but also from different locations in the cross section of the conductor. Particularly, the samples were taken from different petals of the cable, and for each petal -from its center, near the central cooling spiral, near the jacket (in the middle position) and in the corners of the petal from the jacket side.…”
