Sandia National Laboratories has tested and evaluated a new infrasound sensor, the MB3a, manufactured by Seismo Wave. These infrasound sensors measure pressure output by a methodology developed by researchers at the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) and the technology was recently licensed to Seismo Wave for production and sales. The purpose of the infrasound sensor evaluation was to determine a measured sensitivity, transfer function, power, self-noise, dynamic range, seismic sensitivity, and selfcalibration ability. The MB3a infrasound sensors are being evaluated for potential use in the International Monitoring System (IMS) of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban-Treaty Organization (CTBTO).

The next generation of acoustic sensors is emerging to supplement legacy sensors traditionally used in regional and global networks. These devices operate under similar principles as traditional sensors, without the need of a separate external digitizer. The calibration of these sensors against their predecessors is crucial to the modernization of conventional technologies. This work describes the characterization of the next-generation MB3 digital microbarometer and the iPrecision smartphone microphone in a non-isolated calibration room across the infrasound (i.e., 0.01–20 Hz) range. The intent is to evaluate nominal instrument performance before deployment. A portable rotary subwoofer is used as a controllable infrasound source to generate single-tone sinusoidal and broadband noise pressure waves in a room configured for calibration purposes. For each device, comparison measurements are made, from which the digital sensitivity and the parametric response is developed. The results provide insight into the performance of the sensors in non-isolated environments. By overlapping the responses of the test sensors, digital sensor performance across the infrasound range can be benchmarked. These responses may serve as a double-reference scheme in future pressure measurements and digital calibrations of acoustic sensors.

The implementation, characterization, and evaluation of a low-cost infrasound sensor developed at the Infrasound Laboratory at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (Infra-NMT) are described. This sensor is based on a commercial micromachined piezoresistive differential pressure transducer that uses a mechanical high-pass filter to reject low-frequency outband energy. The sensor features a low-noise, 2.02-mPa rms (0.5-2 Hz), 5.47-mPa rms (0.1-20 Hz), or 5.62-mPa rms (0.05-20 Hz), flat response between 0.01 and at least 40 Hz; inband sensitivity of 45.13 ± 0.23 /xV Pa"'; and a nominal linear range from -124.5 to +124.5 Pa.
