Metal nanoparticles have been reported as effective catalysts for the removal of refractory compounds from industrial wastewaters in advanced oxidation processes. Additionally, hundreds of thousands of tons of eggshells are discarded worldwide each year. In this work, this waste has been evaluated as support for the synthesis of nanomaterials by wet impregnation method. Four supported catalysts, with a load of iron or copper of 5% and 15%, were prepared and thoroughly characterized by means of different techniques (elemental analysis, XRF, XRD, FTIR, N2 adsorption-desorption, SEM, TEM and TGA). The catalysts performance was evaluated in wet oxidation tests to degrade humic acids, analyzing the evolution with time of COD, biodegradability index (BOD5/COD), color number and pH. The best results were achieved with 15% Cu and 5% Fe catalysts (COD reduction being 82.3% and 75.1%, respectively), whereas a COD reduction of 58% was obtained employing non-impregnated eggshell. This can be mainly attributed to the metal loading and the good metal distribution on the surface of the support. The BOD5 value of humic acids was initially null and, in all assays, the oxidation treatment enhanced the biodegradability. Therefore, eggshell has proved to be an interesting material to be employed as support in nanoparticles preparation.

BACKGROUND: Large volume of landfill leachate concentrate was generated from membrane treatment process, which contained large amount of toxic and refractory compounds. However, there is a lack of proper technologies for the treatment of membrane filtration concentrates. RESULTS: An effective method for treatment of landfill leachate reverse osmosis (RO) concentrate by Fe 0 /PS/O 3 process was investigated to decompose the refractory pollutants and improve the biodegradability. First, the operating conditions includingFe 0 dosage, ozone aeration rate, PS (S 2 O 8 2− ) dosage and initial pH were optimized through single-factor experiment and response surface methodology (RSM) in this study. The results show that the method could obtain high COD (84.1%) and color (99%) removal efficiencies after 30 min treatment under the optimal conditions. Meanwhile, BOD 5 /COD ratio was enhanced from 0.01 to 0.25, which suggests that its biodegradability was improved greatly. The decomposition or transformation of the organic pollutants in RO concentrate was analyzed by UV-vis, EEM and FTIR. Furthermore, the synergetic effect between Fe 0 , PS and O 3 in Fe 0 /PS/O 3 process was investigated according to the present literature and analysis date of SEM-EDS, XRD and XPS. CONCLUSIONS: Collectively, a new Fe 0 /PS/O 3 system was successful developed, and this system could be seemed as a promising technology for the treatment of reverse osmosis concentrate of landfill leachate. Humic and fulvic acids constitute humic substances, a complex mixture of many different acids containing carboxyl and phenolate groups, which are not only the principal soil fertility factors but also the main pollutants present in landfill leachates or natural organic matter in water. Due to their low bacterial biodegradability, fungal biodegradation processes are key for their removal. The present study compiles and comments all the available literature on decomposition of aqueous humic substances by fungi or by their extracellular enzymes alone, focusing on the influence of the reaction conditions. The biodegradation extent mainly depends on the characteristics and concentration of the humic compounds, the type of microorganisms selected, the inoculation mode, the C and N sources, the presence of certain chemicals in the medium, the availability of oxygen, the temperature, and the pH.
