Terrestrial and aquatic mammals of the Pantanal

Abstract: Different works have registered the number of mammal species within the natural habitats of the Pantanal based on currently known records, with species richness ranging from 89 to 152 of annotated occurrences. Our present list sums 174 species. However, at least three factors have to be emphasised to deal with recorded numbers: 1) to establish the ecotone limit between the floodplain (which is the Pantanal) and its neighbouring domain like the Cerrado, besides the existence of maps recently produced; 2) the la… Show more

“…The Pantanal biome, the largest tropical wetland area of the world, encompasses between 140 000 km 2 and 195 000 km 2 , and is located within the Brazilian states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul, and portions of Bolivia and Paraguay. The Pantanal ecosystem is characterized by immense diversity, in which more than 90 species of terrestrial mammal, among them Canidae, Felidae, species of the Rodentia, Tayassuidae, Cervidae and others, in addition to domestic animals (cattle, horses, dogs) share the same habitat (Alho et al ., ), contributing to the maintenance of a rich ixodid tick fauna (Pereira et al ., ; Labruna et al ., ). Livestock activities and tourism related to fishing and safari are among the most important economic activities of the Pantanal area; for this reason, the study of tick‐borne diseases in this area is of great significance to public health (Melo et al ., ).…”

“…In our study, some species were seen eating from latrines only during the high-water season, when food availability is generally lower in the Pantanal (Alho et al 2011).…”

“…Environmental differences among Cerrado, Pantanal and Atlantic Forest can determine floristic and faunal variations (e.g. Alho et al 2011a), thus we present records of bats according to these domains. We formerly searched for records of bat species in Mato Grosso do Sul reported in the literature, using as keywords the names of species and families, and combinations of the words (in English and Portuguese): bats, Chiroptera, distribution, occurrence, Cerrado, Chaco, Mato Grosso, Pantanal.…”
