Terrein performs antitumor functions on esophageal cancer cells by inhibiting cell proliferation and synergistic interaction with cisplatin

Abstract: Abstract.Terrein is a bioactive fungal metabolite isolated from Aspergillus terreus. Besides being a melanogenesis inhibitor, previous studies have revealed that terrein has antiproliferative effects on a number of types of cancer tumors. In the present study, the inhibitory effect of terrein on esophageal cancer was evaluated and the possible underlying mechanisms were investigated. The results revealed that terrein inhibited the proliferation of Eca109 esophageal cancer cells in a dose-and time-dependent man… Show more

“…Terrein has been reported to possess certain biological activities, such as anti-melanogenesis 39 , an anti-proliferative effect in human cancer cells 40 and an anti-inflammatory effect in human gingival fibroblasts 18 . Mechanistically, terrein has been reported to show anti-cancer activity in human cancer cells by inducing apoptosis and cell cycle arrest 40 , 41 , and, to my knowledge, a general toxicity of terrein has not been reported. However, the anti-virulence activity of terrein against bacteria is reported for the first time in this study.…”

“…AB is the OD 450 ratio of the two-drug combination group to the control group; A and B are the OD 450 ratios of each of the single-drug groups to the control group. CDI <1 indicates a synergistic effect, CDI <0.7 indicates a significant synergistic effect, CDI =1 indicates additivity, and CDI >1 indicates antagonism ( 31 ).…”
