The consumers’ demand for safe foods without chemical additives increased the research for green solutions, based on natural antimicrobials. Plants can be an important source of bioactive compounds able to prevent the development of foodborne pathogens and spoilage microflora. This paper aimed to characterize phenolic extracts (PEs) and essential oils (EOs) obtained from Mediterranean Rubus fruticosus leaves and Juniperus oxycedrus needles and to evaluate their antimicrobial effects against Listeria monocytogenes Scott A. The growth dynamics with sub-lethal concentrations of plant derivatives were modeled and flow cytometry was used to better evidence the effect on cell viability and culturability. The results showed that these plant derivatives affected the growth of L. monocytogenes, increasing lag phase (about 40 h in the presence of PEs vs. 8 h in the control) and decreasing the final cell load of at least 1 log cycle with respect to the control. R. fruticosus EO was the most effective, determining an initial decrease of cell counts of about 6 log cycles, followed by a restart of growth after 10 h, with rate similar to the control (0.08 with R. fruticosus EO vs. 0.09 ((log CFU/ml)/h in the control) but significantly lower final cell load (7.33 vs. 8.92 log CFU/ml). According to flow cytometry, only R. fruticosus EO induced a relevant increase of dead cells, while the other plant derivatives determined different extent of sub-lethal cell injury. The discrepancy observed in some cases between viability and culturability could indicate the presence of cells not able to grow in culture media, whose fate needs to be further investigated to assess their potential recovery, thus bringing to an overestimation of the antimicrobial effect of these substances. This research contributed to increase the knowledge of these underused raw materials such as blackberry leaves and juniper needles that can be exploited in food and other industries.

Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat.) is a seasonal plant with high medicinal and aesthetic value, and drying is an effective practice to enhance its storability after harvesting. The effects of hot air drying (HAD), combined infrared and hot air drying (IR-HAD), and sequential IR-HAD and HAD (IR-HAD + HAD) on the drying behavior, color, shrinkage, aroma profiles, phenolic compounds, and microstructure of chrysanthemum cakes were studied. Results showed that the increasing temperature resulted in a decrease in drying time and an increase in drying rate and moisture diffusivity. The Logarithmic and Page models exhibited superior fit in describing the dehydration process. Among the three drying strategies, IR-HAD was more effective in reducing energy consumption, improving shrinkage, water holding capacity, water binding capacity and cellular microstructure, while IR-HAD + HAD showed better inhibitory effect on color deterioration. Furthermore, gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis revealed that different drying strategies dramatically influenced the aroma profiles in samples, and IR-HAD obtained the highest concentration of volatiles. The results of ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) indicated that the introduction of infrared radiation contributed to increasing the contents of chlorogenic acid, luteolin, total phenolic and flavonoid. These suggested that IR-HAD was a promising technique for drying medicinal chrysanthemum.

Aging has become a concern for many people, especially women. Given that high-quality anti-aging products are of high cost; it has imperative to search for other economical sources. Essential oils are frequently used in cosmetics products due to a wide range of biological activities as well as their pleasant odor. The current study aimed to investigate the biochemical effect of the cosmetic potential of selected Apiaceous essential oils, traditionally used for skincare, by evaluating their anti-wrinkle activity. It is worth noting that, coriander essential oil showed the highest collagenase, elastase, tyrosinase, and hyaluronidase inhibitory activities compared to other Apiaceous oils (fennel, anise, and cumin). GC–MS proved that coriander essential oil showed a very high level of oxygenated monoterpenes, with linalool (81.29%) as the most abundant constituent. Intriguingly, coriander oil cream and Coriander Essential Oil-loaded Lipid Nanoparticles (CEOLNs) formulations attenuated in vivo UV-induced skin photoaging that was manifested by significantly decreased MDA, COX-2, PGE-2, MMP-1, JNK, and AP-1 levels. Moreover, these pharmaceutical dosage forms significantly increased skin collagen content compared to UV-injured group. Also, coriander essential oil significantly increased TGFβ, TGFβII, and SMAD3 protein expression levels compared to UV-injured group. In conclusion, the pharmaceutical dosage forms of coriander oil possess anti-wrinkle activities that could have an auspicious role in amending extrinsic aging.
