Termite Retinex: a new implementation based on a colony of intelligent agents

Abstract: Abstract. The original presentation of Retinex, a spatial color correction and image enhancement algorithm modeling the human vision system, as proposed by Land and McCann in 1964, uses paths to explore the image in search of a local reference white point. The interesting results of this algorithm have led to the development of many versions of Retinex. They follow the same principle but differ in the way they explore the image, with, for example, random paths, random samples, convolution masks, and variation… Show more

“…The computational complexity of the TR sampling approach is O(Nl|I |). Based on some experimental results, the work in [11] suggests to set up l as the 70% of the length of the diagonal of Supp(I ). This makes the complexity of TR much smaller than O(N|I | 2 ).…”

“…Many SCAs exist, derived from Retinex theory by Land and McCann 15 and Land 16 . Among the many SCA algorithms we recall in particular RSR by Provenzi et al 17 , STRESS by Kolås et al 18 , ACE by Rizzi et al 19 , RACE by Provenzi et al 20 , Termite Retinex by Simone et al 21 and QBRIX by Gianini et al 22 .…”

“…The straightforward random path-based computation presented by Land and McCann [10] has been modified to consider various models such as random sprays [13], Brownian motion [11,14], or swarn termites movement [15]. Retinex has been also mathematically defined using minimizations based on the Laplacian of the image [6] or variational-based energy minimizations [7].…”
