Termination of Midtrimester Pregnancies with Extraovular 0.1% Ethacridine Lactate. Accurate Method for Estimation of Blood Loss. Role of Spartein Sulfate

Abstract: Sixty cases of midtrimester abortions with extraovular 0.1% ethacridine lactate alone were studied. Blood loss during and after abortion was calculated measuring alkaline haematin as reported by Shaw et al.7) Its success rate was compared with another study of 90 cases in which 0.1 % ethacridine lactate with spartein sulfate was used. Where ethacridine lactate alone was used 41.66% cases aborted in 24 hours and 83.3% in 48 hours with mean induction abortion interval of 27 hours 18 minutes. While in other group… Show more

“…This is due to its efficacy and good safety profile. 4,5 However instillation of extra-amniotic ethacridine is not without drawbacks like long instillation abortion interval and failures. Prostaglandins have strong oxytocic effect and thus are expected to shorten the abortion instillation interval.…”

“…[1][2][3] Ethacridine lactate has long been used for second trimester abortion and is considered a time tested, safe and effective method. 4,5 When used alone it has a prolonged inductionabortion interval and increased incidence of failure. In order to improve the efficacy of the procedure various other techniques and drugs have been combined with ethacridine.…”

“…While the procedure is notable for its safety, its efficacy is far from satisfactory with high failure rates, long induction-abortion intervals and complications. 4 The Prostaglandins from the E group have a higher ratio of cervical ripening to uterine contractility and are preferred to Prostaglandins of the F group. Among these Misoprostol is a Prostaglandin E1 Analogue that has recently been used by a number of authors for second trimester abortions singly or with Mifepristone RU 486, Methotrexate, Gemeprost, Ethacridine lactate.…”

“…Ethacridine lactate [1][2][3][4] is an antiseptic in solutions of 0.1%; it is also used as an agent for second trimester abortion. Up to 150 mL of 0.1% solution is instilled extra amniotically using a foley catheter.…”
