Teratological effects of 2,4-dinitrophenol, produced water' and naphthalene on embryos of the inland silverside Menidia beryllina

Abstract: Embryos of the inland silverside Menjdia beryllina were exposed to 3 teratogens: (1) 2,4-dmitrophenol. (2,4-DNP), (2) 'produced water' (PW), and (3) naphthalene (NPH). Tests were conducted by placing single embryos in glass tissue culture tubes containing 6 m1 of saline exposure media. Twenty tubes were used for each exposure concentration and for controls. A severity-index based upon craniofacial, cardiovascular, and skeletal terata was used to rank responses each day. The compounds tested caused teratogenic … Show more

“…2), and the chance that larvae were exposed to salinities <10‰ was minimal. Pericardial edema has been described in many developmental studies with several fish species and different toxicants (Waterman 1940;Weis and Weis 1974;Dial 1978;Gillespie and Baumann 1986;Middaugh et al 1988;Marty et al 1990), but ascites is less often described. Ascites was the main lesion associated with blue-sac disease in wild lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) larvae, and ascites also occurred in lake trout larvae exposed to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-pdioxin as fertilized eggs (Symula et al 1990;Spitsbergen et al 1991).…”

“…beryllina embryo tests were only used to evaluate virulence of M. anisopliae 1080 conidiospores. Embryonic M. beryllina were obtained from adults that spawned naturally in the laboratory at 5% salinity and 25°C as described by Middaugh et al (1987Middaugh et al ( , 1988. The photoperiod was 16 h light and 8 h dark.…”
