Terahertz generation in nitrides due to transit-time resonance assisted by optical phonon emission

Abstract: The conditions for THz radiation generation caused by electron transit-time resonance in momentum and real spaces under optical phonon emission are analyzed for nitride-based materials and their structures. It is shown that such a mechanism provides a unique possibility to realize sub-THz and THz radiation generation at the border between the electro-optical and electronic techniques by using two alternative approaches: (i) amplification of transverse electromagnetic waves in 3D bulk materials and 2D quantum w… Show more

“…Transit time resonance assisted by optical phonon emission in wide bandgap semiconductors and related plasma instabilities are another alternative, predicted by theory and confirmed by simulations [5,6]. A recently developed planar asymmetric nonlinear nanodevice, called self-switching diode (SSD), is also a promising candidate to operate in the THz range [7], as we will illustrate in this work.…”

“…The OPTTR induces a number of interesting effects (for review see Refs. 8,9). The most important manifestation of this phenomenon is the possibility of microwave amplification and generation in the sub-THz and THz frequency regions.…”

“…Moreover, a system able to measure the transmission of THz radiations through different types of passive and active samples would be of a great benefit for the development of THz detectors and emitters. For instance, in the latter case, the sample may act as an active medium for the laser/maser structures . Since the metal contacts may also play an important role in the THz radiation transmission of the sample, their effect must be taken into account.…”
