We characterized soil physical and chemical properties and soil organic matter in epigeal termite mounds in pastures to evaluate the changes promoted by termites in comparison to an adjacent area. We selected seven active epigeal termite mounds in the municipality of Seropédica, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Soil samples were collected from top, center and base positions of each mound, at 0.50 and 1.50 m distance from the base of the mound. We identified individuals of the genus Embiratermes, Velocitermes, and Orthognathotermes. The humin fraction predominated over the humic and fulvic acid fractions both in mounds and adjacent soil. The amount of organic matter and the mineral fractions (mineral-associated organic carbon -MOC) varied among builder species. The studied chemical attributes point to a higher concentration of nutrients in the mounds than in the adjacent soil.

RESUMOA construção da Usina Hidrelétrica de Tucuruí-PA e seu reservatório resultaram na criação de ilhas artificiais que ao longo do tempo tem sofrido mudanças com o uso e ocupação da área por comunidades ribeirinhas e o aumento do nível de água durante os períodos de chuva. Esses processos resultam em alterações que acarretam na perda da capacidade produtiva do solo, como a erosão hídrica, acidificação dos solos e exaustão de nutrientes, tornando-o inviável para a exploração socioeconômica e ambiental. Os estudos e análises acerca das características do solo fornecem informações que contribuem para o uso racional e conservação de ecossistemas sustentáveis. Objetivou-se com esse trabalho realizar uma análise sobre as alterações nos ecossistemas naturais, utilizando indicadores químicos e fertilidade no solo das ilhas do lago da UHT de Tucuruí -PA,. Foram coletadas amostras entre 0-40 cm, em um transecto que seguia desde à margem da ilha até o ponto de vegetação, e analisados os aspectos químicos que contribuem na estrutura e fertilidade do solo. A análise resultou em um solo degradado pelo processo de lixiviação, com níveis muito baixos de P e C, devido aos processos de inundação que ocorrem nos períodos de chuva e aumento do nível do lago. A escassez de nutrientes nas áreas de vegetação, e a influência da saturação hídrica na qualidade do solo às margens do lago sugerem um solo com pouca estrutura e resistência contra fenômenos de erosão e assoreamento. Monocropping and intercropping maize and pasture irrigated areas in promoting changes in soil biological attributes, however, little is known about these changes in environments ecotone between Cerrado and Caatinga. The aim of the study was to evaluate microbial attributes and carbon and nitrogen stocks in distrophic yellow Latosol soil under monocropping of maize and brachiaria and intercropping of these cultures under two irrigation blades. The study was conducted in the Alvorada do Gurgéia city, Piauí State, Brazil, during the year of 2009, the treatments consisting of three production systems (monocropping of maize and brachiaria and intercropping between maize and brachiaria), under two irrigation blades (L 1 = 647.9 e L 2 = 564.5 mm) e two soil depths (0-0.10 and 0.10-0.20 m). The variables analyzed were microbial biomass, basal respiration, microbial quotient, metabolic quotient, the contents of total organic carbon, the nitrogen and carbon and nitrogen stocks. Biological attributes of the soil are influenced by monocropping and intercropping of maize and brachiaria, irrigation blades and soil depth. The blades of irrigation, by influencing the water content in the soil, have greater effect on the microbial attributes, may occur individually, as in the case of microbial carbon, or associated production systems of maize and brachiaria under intercropping or monocropping, as detected for of total organic carbon, microbial and metabolic quotient, nitrogen content and carbon and nitrogen stocks. RESUMO: Monocultivos e consórcio de milho e braquiária em áreas irrigadas promovem modificações nos atributos biológicos do solo; no entanto, pouco se conhece sobre essas alterações em ambientes de ecótono entre Cerrado e Caatinga.
