Monocropping and intercropping maize and pasture irrigated areas in promoting changes in soil biological attributes, however, little is known about these changes in environments ecotone between Cerrado and Caatinga. The aim of the study was to evaluate microbial attributes and carbon and nitrogen stocks in distrophic yellow Latosol soil under monocropping of maize and brachiaria and intercropping of these cultures under two irrigation blades. The study was conducted in the Alvorada do Gurgéia city, Piauí State, Brazil, during the year of 2009, the treatments consisting of three production systems (monocropping of maize and brachiaria and intercropping between maize and brachiaria), under two irrigation blades (L 1 = 647.9 e L 2 = 564.5 mm) e two soil depths (0-0.10 and 0.10-0.20 m). The variables analyzed were microbial biomass, basal respiration, microbial quotient, metabolic quotient, the contents of total organic carbon, the nitrogen and carbon and nitrogen stocks. Biological attributes of the soil are influenced by monocropping and intercropping of maize and brachiaria, irrigation blades and soil depth. The blades of irrigation, by influencing the water content in the soil, have greater effect on the microbial attributes, may occur individually, as in the case of microbial carbon, or associated production systems of maize and brachiaria under intercropping or monocropping, as detected for of total organic carbon, microbial and metabolic quotient, nitrogen content and carbon and nitrogen stocks.
The cowpea represents one of the most important agricultural species of the brazilian Northeast, and proper management of mineral fertilizer that culture becomes essential to their production. The present work aimed to study the effect of the interaction between potassium and phosphorus in the presence of the inoculant INPA 03-11B in the culture of cowpea for Production Pole of Bom Jesus, Piaui, Brazil. The experiment was conducted in the experimental area of the Federal University of Piaui, Campus of Bom Jesus, PI, about a Quartzarenic Neosol. The experimental design was a randomized block with four replications. The treatments consisted of four levels of potassium (0, 35, 70 and 105 kg K 2 O ha -1 ) and four levels of phosphorus (0, 40, 80 and 120 kg P 2 O 5 ha -1 ). Nodule number, nodule dry and fresh biomass, shoot dry biomass and grain yields were evaluated. The potassium and phosphorus levels and their interaction affected nodulation and parameters indicators of production of cowpea. The interaction between the phosphorus and potassium levels favored the nodulation, shoot dry biomass and grain yield. The highest grain yield of cowpea was obtained with the fertilization of 67.73 kg of P 2 O 5 ha -1 and 35 kg of K 2 O ha -1 .
The aim of this study was to evaluate microbial biomass and total organic carbon and nitrogen of an irrigated Quartzarenic Neosol cultivated with two cowpea cultivars in Bom Jesus, Piauí, Brazil. The experiment was conducted in a randomized experimental block design in split plots. The plots consist of two cowpea cultivars (Aracê and Tumucumaque) and the subplots were composed of five different irrigation regimes (L1 = 108.2; L2 = 214.7; L3 = 287.9; L4 = 426.1, and L5 = 527.7 mm). Soil samples were collected at a depth of 0-0.20 m in order to evaluate basal soil respiration, microbial biomass carbon, metabolic quotient, microbial quotient, content, and storage of soil carbon and nitrogen. Basal soil respiration, microbial biomass carbon, microbial metabolic quotient, and microbial quotient are influenced by the interaction between cowpea cultivars and irrigation. The cultivar Aracê showed greater stimulus to the microbial community, while the irrigation regimes with 214.7 and 287.9 mm (60 and 90% of ETo, respectively) provided the best moisture conditions for microbial activities. Key words: Biological soil properties. Soil nitrogen. Vigna unguiculata. Desertification. Based on this focus this work aimed to evaluate the following in production systems: the influence of irrigation blades on the resistance to penetrate the root (RP) and chemical attributes of a dystrophic yellow oxisol, aiming to the implantation of crop-livestock integration system at Gurguéia irrigated perimeter, PI. The work was developed at Embrapa experimental Middle-North unit, at Alvorada do Gurguéia, PI, between 2009/2010. To evaluate corn and Brachiaria production system under single and consortiated condition a stripe experiment was installed, this corresponds to two irrigation blades per sprinkling (L1 = 647.9 mm and L2 = 564.5 mm), each one subdivided in blocks with corn, Brachiaria and consortiated Brachiaria + corn. RP and other chemical attributes were evaluated at 0-10, 0.10-0.20 and 0.20-0.30 m depths. For chemical characterization, water pH, exchangeable cation, exchangeable acidity, phosphorus available and organic matter, were determined. Through these determinations it was possible to verify that soil production systems influenced RP from depth 0-0.10 m with increase of this in relation to native Forest in the following sequence: Corn > consortium > Brachiaria. Amongst soil production systems the greatest alterations in chemical attributes were verified in consortium when subjected to L1 and Brachiaria cultivation when subjected to L2 irrigation. Key-words: Zea mays, Brachiaria ruziziensis, Irrigation blades.
