Tensile strength of the posterior and anterior layer of the rectus abdominis muscle sheath in cadavers

Abstract: Purpose:The aim of the present study was to assess, in cadavers, the resistance to medial traction of the posterior and anterior layer of the rectus abdominis muscle sheath. Methods: An anatomical, prospective, self-controlled study was carried out in 20 male cadavers. An evaluation of the tension of the posterior and anterior layers of the rectus abdominis muscle sheath was performed following anatomical dissection of these structures. The traction necessary to advance the tissue ten millimeters was assessed … Show more

“…The points studied were broken down as shown in Table 1. The values obtained in each level were inserted in the formula used to calculate the traction index 5,6,10 . The traction index is the ratio between the traction (force) measured at the aponeurotic point, and the distance on which the point was mobilized.…”

“…At these locations, the rectus abdominis muscle is completely surrounded by the muscle sheath. This is important to ensure sample homogeneity, since the amount of collagen may vary over muscle areas not covered by aponeurosis 1,[15][16][17][18][19] . Male gender was used as an inclusion criterion, so that the observations were not affected by the number of pregnancies and possible diastasis recti abdominis, which is more common in women.…”

“…The linea alba was resected along the edges in contact with the rectus abdominis muscle (Figure 1). Dynamometer readings of tensile force were inserted into the following equation for the calculation of the traction index described by Nahas and Ferreira [13][14][15] :…”
