Tendência secular de 10 e 20 anos da maturação sexual de escolares

Abstract: -The objective of this study was to verify the secular trends of sexual maturation of students between 11 and 15 years old, during a period of 10 and 20 years. The sample was composed by 1,002 students aged between 11 and 15 years; 536 boys (12.6±1.3 years old) and 466 girls (12.5±1.2 years old) who took part in the Ilhabela Mixed-Longitudinal Project on Growth, Development, and Physical Fitness. The students' assessment period occurred in 1990/91 (initial), 2000/01 (10 years later), and 2009/10 (20 years late… Show more

“…9 In Brazil, data on the subject are scarce and controversial. [10][11][12] The characterization of puberty in boys in epidemiological studies is more complex than in girls, considering it relies on two main methods: one based on pictures, presented by Marshall and Tanner, 7 and another, more precise, based on measurements that can be taken with an orchidometer. [13][14][15]9 Therefore, it is difficult to make an accurate comparison between studies.…”

“…A trend towards earlier age at menarche was observed in another Brazilian study with girls from private schools comparing cross-sectional data between 2001 and 2010 in which the mean age at menarche decreased from 12.35 to 12.08 years (Castilho et al, 2012). This result was not observed in a study in public schools comparing data on age at menarche at three time points, 1990/1991, 2000/2001 and 2009/2010, in which no statistically significant differences were found (Farias et al, 2012). However, comparisons between these results must take into account socio-economic and health differences between regions (Szwarcwald et al, 2016) and the study year, in addition to the differences in research methodologies.…”

“…The understanding of the determinants of menarche in LMIC is comparatively poor, mainly due to a lack of data (Leone & Brown, 2020). Given the importance of this factor as a health predictor and considering the lack of recent studies on the trend of age at menarche in the Brazilian population (Castilho et al, 2012;Farias et al, 2012), this study aims to describe the time trend of age at menarche in schoolgirls from southern Brazil evaluated in 2007Brazil evaluated in , 2012Brazil evaluated in /2013Brazil evaluated in and 2018Brazil evaluated in /2019 to assess its association with being overweight, including obesity, and socio-economic condition.…”

“…A previous Brazilian longitudinal study observed a decrease in the age at which boys reached the PH3 stage between 1991 and 2000 (12.9 vs. 12.0 years, p < .01) and between 1991 and 2010 (12.9 vs. 12.0 years, p < .01), and the G4 stage between 2000 and 2010 (13.8, 13.1; p < .01); however, there were no significant differences in girls (Farias et al, 2012).…”
