Ten-year trends in antibiotic usage at a tertiary care hospital in Korea, 2004 to 2013

Abstract: Background/Aims: This study was performed to evaluate trends in antibiotic usage at a tertiary care hospital in Korea. Methods: This study collated antibiotic prescription data and total patient days for inpatients at a tertiary care hospital in Korea between 2004 and 2013. The consumption of each class of antibiotic was converted to def ined daily dose (DDD)/1,000 patient-days. We defined 3rd generation cephalosporins, 4th generation cephalosporins, β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitors, and fluoroquinolones as bro… Show more

“…Similarly, nationwide cefotaxime use increased and was correlated with the increase in the proportion of cefotaxime-resistant E. coli isolates [ 26 ]. In addition, a stepwise increase in the consumption of broad-spectrum antibiotics, such as ESC and FQ, was observed at a Korean hospital over the last decade [ 27 ]. As for the aspect of horizontal transmission, the change in the major clonal type of uropathogenic E. coli strains might have affected the emergence of antimicrobial resistance.…”

“…Kim et al mostraron un aumento en el consumo de antimicrobianos de amplio espectro como cefalosporinas de cuarta generación y de antimicrobianos para cubrir bacterias multirresistentes, como carbapenémicos, glicopéptidos, polimixina y tigeciclina ( 15 ). Este es un comportamiento similar al nuestro; sin embargo, en el caso particular de los carbapenémicos, solo se observó un aumento en el consumo de ertapenem y meropenem, ya que en el caso de imipenem la disminución es evidente.…”

“…A similar distribution was observed for patients in general wards. In comparison, 'appropriate antibiotics recommendation for patients with suspected infections without a proven site of infection but without causative pathogens' (37.4%) was most commonly observed in patients in intensive care units, followed by 'appropriate antibiotics recommendation for patients with suspected infections with a proven site of infection and Without a proven site of infection or causative pathogens 14 (11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17) 14 (11.25-19.25) 13 (11)(12)(13)(14)(15) .784…”
