Temporal variation of Brown and Green Lacewings (Neuroptera: Hemerobiidae and Chrysopidae) collected with McPhail traps from a fruit orchard in Southeast Brazil

Abstract: This study was aimed at the identification of the Neuroptera (Insecta) obtained with McPhail traps in an orchard of native and exotic fruits in Jaboticabal, SP, Brazil (21°14’S / 48°17’W). Weekly sampling took place between May 2009 and April 2010. 187 specimens of Neuroptera were obtained: Nusalala tessellata (Gerstaecker, 1888) (Hemerobiidae) (176 specimens / 94.1% of the total), Leucochrysa cruentata (Schneider, 1851) (6 / 3.2%), Ceraeochrysa cubana (Hagen, 1861), Ceraeochrysa everes (Banks, 1920), Chrysope… Show more

“…In Brazil, Nusalala and Hemerobius were reported in several studies carried out in agricultural Freitas, 2002, 2003;Lara et al, 2008Lara et al, , 2010Lara et al, , 2020Melo et al, 2020) and wild environments (Oliveira et al, 2013;Lara and Perioto, 2021;Schuster and Machado, 2021), and in most of them, Nusalala was the most abundant genus. However, in all these studies, Megalomus, Notiobiella and Sympherobius are genera, so far, poorly represented in population surveys conducted by the authors in agroecosystems and wild environments.…”

“…One strategy that is growing in popularity among producers for the population reduction of floriculture pests is biological control (Carvalho et al, 2019). Among the possible bioagents for use against P. citri is Chrysoperla externa (Hagen, 1861) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae), a Neotropical species naturally found in several agroecosystems (Carvalho and Souza, 2009;Cortez-Mondaca et al, 2016;Romero et al, 2019;Lara et al, 2020). Recently, C. externa was registered in Brazil for commercialization and control of different pest species (Agrofit, 2022).…”

“…In recent years, rose producers have adopted more sustainable control measures for the management of pest arthropods, including the use of entomophagous and entomopathogenic agents (Souza and Marucci, 2021). The predator Chrysoperla externa (Hagen, 1861) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) occurs naturally in cultivated areas, which makes its application as a control agent viable (Rodrigues-Silva et al, 2017;Martins et al, 2019;Lara et al, 2020). The larvae of this lacewing have a high capacity for population reduction of several pests, including caterpillars, whiteflies, thrips, psyllids, eggs, and small caterpillars of moths (Fonseca et al, 2015;Castro et al, 2016;Battel et al, 2017;Cuello et al, 2019;Luna-Espino et al, 2020).…”
