ABSTRACT. Local diversity and infl uence of seasonality on amphibians and reptiles assemblages in the Reserva Extrativista Chico Mendes, Acre, Brazil. Despite the high richness of amphibians and reptiles known for the southwestern portion of the Brazilian Amazon, the knowledge of these is punctual and few studies have evaluated the temporal variations in the occurrence and abundance of species. The goals of this study were to present the amphibians and reptiles assemblages in a locality of the Chico Mendes Extractive Reserve, verify which climate variables infl uence the temporal fl uctuations in richness and abundance, and identify the main species of the amphibians and reptiles infl uenced by them. The study area is located in the Seringal Etelvi region, southwestern portion of the Reserve, municipality of Brasiléia, state of Acre. Data collection took place between October 2011 and September 2012, for 48 sampling days, using the methods of searches limited by time and pitfall traps. There were recorded 978 specimens of 31 amphibians and 54 reptiles. Higher richness and abundance of amphibians occurred during the rainy season, with the monthly abundance positively associated with the mean temperature. Only the abundance of reptiles was higher during the rainy period. However, both richness and abundance were positively associated with mean temperature. Four amphibians, Allobates gr. marchesianus, Hamptophryne boliviana (Parker, 1927), Boana geographica (Spix, 1824) and Rhinella marina (Linnaeus, 1758), and two reptiles, Kentropyx pelviceps Cope, 1868 and Norops fuscoauratus (D'Orbigny, 1837), had their monthly abundances positively associated with the mean temperature. The lizard Dactyloa punctata (Daudin, 1802) had the monthly abundance associated with precipitation. It was possible to verify the increase of richness and abundance of amphibians and reptiles during periods when the availability of resources is favorable for many species. Species can react diff erently to climatic variations, whereas others are sensitive to fl uctuations, others seem answer easily or not reduce their abundances in periods theoretically unfavorable.KEYWORDS. Biogeographical history and current ecological interactions have usually been addressed separately to explain the spatial distribution of patterns of biodiversity. In this study, we evaluated the integrated effects of biogeographical and environmental factors in structuring the diurnal amphibian anuran assemblages of the upper Madeira River, southwestern Amazonia. We used a sampling design involving 98 standardized units, distributed across seven locations covering both banks of the river's course in the state of Rondônia, Brazil. We conducted searches for frogs in three campaigns between February 2010 and February 2011, aiming to: (1) evaluate the effect of the Madeira River as a biogeographic barrier at the species‐assemblage level, and (2) test the influence of seven environmental variables (vegetation structure, vegetation cover, soil nutrients, soil structure, slope, elevation, and distance from the river bank) on the spatial structure of the frog assemblages, separately on each riverbank. Thirteen species of diurnal frogs were recorded, six of which were restricted to one of the river margins. Multivariate analysis of variance indicated a significant effect of the river as a barrier. Multiple regression analyses suggested that the environmental variables structuring frog assemblages differ on either side of the river. We found that both historical elements (on a regional scale) and environmental factors (at a local scale) shaped the occurrence and distribution of frog species in the study area.

Studies on amphibian autumn migrations to hibernation sites are few, and those investigating the conditions controlling the timing of migrations are even fewer. I investigated an explosive-breeding frog, Rana sakuraii, in Japanese mountain headwaters in 6 different years, focusing on the start and end of autumn migrations. Autumn migrations began in late October. Initially, frogs moved into the streams from terrestrial sites around the stream sources, and thereafter moved downstream entirely underwater. Start days were always the first rainy days after the minimum air temperature had dropped to about 6°C or lower (minor start days) or about 4°C or lower (major start days) regardless of the air temperature on the start days. In early or mid-December, in-stream migratory movements ended when the maximum water temperature dropped below the 5°C threshold (the same threshold temperature initiating the winter breeding migration). I hypothesize that, in many temperate-zone amphibians, the timing of autumn migration to hibernation sites is basically dependent on three common conditions: (1) the experience of a prerequisite minimum air temperature (PMAT) before the start day; (2) the decrease in day length to a threshold value; (3) the first rainy (or high humidity) day after (1). Further, I hypothesize that the threshold ambient temperature inducing the end of the autumn migration is almost the same as that inducing emergence from hibernation, that is, the start of the winter breeding migration for explosive breeders, and that this is the daily maximum, and not the daily minimum.
