Temporal and along-shelf distribution of the larval fish assemblage at Gran Canaria, Canary Islands

Abstract: SUMMARY: Temporal and spatial variations of the larval fish community off the island of Gran Canaria (Canary Islands) were studied in weekly surveys from October 2005 to June 2006. A total of 156 taxa, belonging to 51 families and 15 orders, were identified. Myctophidae was by far the most abundant family (30%), followed by Sparidae (11%), Clupeidae (9%) and Gonostomatidae (7%). “…Two main reasons allowed us to discard the African origin for these larvae: (i) S. aurita was out of their spawning season in the African coast (i.e., summer, Ettahiri et al ., ) but not in the islands (Moyano and Hernández‐León, ); (ii) Gobidae and Labridae are relatively abundant in the coastal region of Fuerteventura. “…Variations in the predominance of males and females could be explained by the ecological behaviour of the species (Arkhipov et al., ; Menezes et al., ; Pakhorukov, ), owing to the fact that females spawn on the ground and are not catchable by fishing gear during spawning season (in winter‐spring) as occurs in related species (Abaunza et al., ).
