Temperature-insensitive fiber twist sensor based on elliptical-core few-mode fiber

Abstract: A highly sensitive fiber optics twist sensor is proposed and experimentally demonstrated using elliptical-core few-mode fiber (e-FMF). With the help of a fixed-phase plate for conversion from LP11 to LP01 mode, the twist angle can be linearly mapped to the spatial rotation of LP11 mode profile and consequently discriminated by monitoring the optical power variation at the standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) output. When the optical power at the e-FMF output is 10 mW, the twist an… Show more

“…A wide range of all-fiber in-line twist sensors based on different types of fibers has been reported, which includes multimode fibers (MMFs) [12], polarization-maintaining fibers (PMFs) [10], photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) [13,14], special fibers [15,16], and fiber gratings [17,18]. Each of these sensor types possesses its own set of advantages and disadvantages, making them suitable for different applications.…”

“…The EFMF has the advantages of low loss, low crosstalk, and low bending loss, which are obviously better than those in the studies mentioned in Refs. [25][26][27][28][29]. Obviously, our proposed EFMF not only has important applications of MIMO-FREE in the optical communication field, but also can be widely used in the pulse transmission systems [30,31], high-speed transmission systems [32,33], sensor systems [34], and fiber laser systems [35,36].…”

“…Finally, there are also numerous sensors based on special fibers such as, elliptical core few mode fiber [11], two mode fiber (TMF) [25] and square coreless fibers (SCF) [6] have been designed and fabricated for twist sensing. Nevertheless, some of them cannot tell the direction of the applied twist.…”
