“…Similar phenomena have been reported for other species of Homoptera. For example, high mortality also was reported for the fifth instar of the potato leafhopper, Empoasca fabae (Harris) Simonet and Pienkowski (1980), the blackfaced leafhopper, Graminella nigrifrons (Forbes) (Sedlacek et al 1986), the bean aphid, Aphis fabae (Scop.) (Tsitsipis and Mittler 1976).…”

“…Mortality was greatest in the 1st and 5th instar nymphs. Simonet & Pienkowski (1980)found a similar situation with the potato leafhopper Empoasca fabae (Harris), and suggested this was probably because of major changes that the 5th instar was undergoingbefore development to adult, and to handling in the case of lst instar nymphs. The causes of mortality among 1st and 5th instars in this study were probably similar.…”

“…In the laboratory, the average developmental time from Þrst to third instar is about 4 d, whereas development from third instar to adult is about 10 d (Simonet and Pienkowski 1980). The developmental times for the potato leafhopper on FGplh13 with the trichomes removed and P5373 with trichomes intact or removed were slightly shorter, which could be attributed to more optimal conditions being provided by the environmental growth chamber.…”
