Temperature and pH-responsive nanogels as intelligent drug delivery systems: A comprehensive review

Abstract: With the advancement of technology and the evolution of modern healthcare systems, the focus is shifting from conventional drug delivery vehicles to novel, nanosized carriers. Nanogels are an example of such nanosized drug delivery systems that have been researched at length. They can be designed to be sensitive to a multitude of physical and chemical stimuli and this endows them with the capability to deliver the drugs they carry in a site-specific manner. These intelligent drug delivery systems are biocompat… Show more

“…The combination of two or more different monomers that have a different response to a stimulus can result in multi-responsive copolymers [1]. In particular, temperature and pH are interesting stimuli that can be explored, including their applications [2][3][4][5][6] due to their availability in the environment.…”

“…Currently, different nanogels with tailored properties have been developed with potential applications in the treatment of cancer [ 2 ]. Some of them have been synthesized in response to stimuli such as temperature, pH, or enzymes, mainly focused on passive targeting [ 3 ]; while others have been developed by modifying their surface with biological ligands, such as proteins, polysaccharides, peptides, and other small molecules, for both passive and active targeting through recognition of cancer cell receptors [ 4 ].…”
