Temperature and duration of vernalization effect on the vegetative growth of garlic (Allium sativum L.) clones in Indonesia

Abstract: Garlic is usually propagated asexually from the cloves. Clove as the propagation source for garlic has many weaknesses. Alternatively, bulbils could be used for the propagation. The aim of this study was to know the effect of temperature and time of vernalization from several clones of Indonesian garlic to bulbil production. This research was conducted at a farmer’s field at Banjarnegara, Central Java, Indonesia. The experiment was arranged in a Completely Randomized Block Design with three factors: temperatur… Show more

“…The number of leaves of the Batu ijo variety was larger than the other two varieties (Table 2), so the bulb of the Batu Ijo variety was heavier than the Tajuk and Gayo varieties (Table 3). The vegetative growth of plants will ultimately determine the generative phase and yield of the plant [21]. This is because good vegetative growth will cause the photosynthesis process to run well.…”

“…In different years, genotypes in Serbia also showed different responses [5]. Different environments such as planting locations, temperatures, and lengths of vernalization can lead to different plant responses [29][30][31].…”

“…Despite the urgency for developing superior varieties, very limited exploration and characterization of Indonesia's local garlic accessions transpired (Hardiyanto et al, 2007;Wahyuni et al, 2023). Moreover, most previous studies discussed their agronomical aspects, such as, adaptation (Kurniaty et al, 2022;Saidah et al, 2022), cultivation techniques (Aswani et al, 2022;Dianawati et al, 2022), temperature, and photoperiod effect on their vegetative growth (Azmi et al, 2022;Kendarini et al, 2022). The genetic information on the available Indonesian local garlic germplasm is still scarce, yet it is necessary for breeding new varieties.…”
