Gayo shallot (Allium cepa L.) is a local shallot cultivar from Central Aceh province that has just received a national superior shallot variety certificate. The objective of this study was to scientifically determine the superiority of Gayo shallots compared to other national superior varieties based on morphological characters, production, and quality of tubers. The study was conducted from July to December 2020. The field study was carried out in Lut Tawar Sub-district, Central Aceh Regency, while laboratory analysis was conducted at the Agroecotechnology Laboratory of the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Malikussaleh. This research used a single-factor randomized block design (RBD) with three replications. The treatments consisted of three varieties: local shallots Gayo, Batu Ijo, and Tajuk. Each unit treatment consisted of 5 plants, resulting in a total of 165 plants. The results showed that Gayo shallots' growth and performance differed from Batu Ijo and Tajuk. The height and number of leaves per clump of Gayo and Tajuk shallot plants were not significantly different. Gayo shallot plant height was 28.50 cm and Tajuk was 28.30 cm, and the number of leaves per Gayo shallot's clump reached 17.80 and Tajuk 15.50, while Batu Ijo's height was 36.05 cm and the number of leaves per clump was 28.10 at 8 weeks after planting (WAP). Batu Ijo had better growth and yield of tubers than Gayo and Tajuk shallots. Regarding similarity, the physical appearance of plants and tuber yields from Gayo was more similar to Tajuk (67%) compared to Batu Ijo (57%).

Garlic (Allium sativum L.) is one of the important herbs worldwide. Genetic studies on Indonesian garlic germplasm are still limited. We aimed to estimate genetic parameters and analyze the Principal Component of Indonesian local garlic accessions. Augmented Block Design with three replications (blocks) was used to characterize 20 accessions with 16 accessions as ‘Test’ and four check varieties. The research was carried out at Lembang, West Java (1250 m asl) from October 2022 until March 2023. The result showed that from block-adjusted ANOVA, tested accessions gave significant differences in number of leaves, leaf length, ratio between length and width of stomata, and yield per plot. A high genotypic coefficient of variance (GCV) was observed on pseudo-stem diameter, root length, and yield per plot. It also showed that the number of leaves, the ratio between length and width of stomata, and yield per plot had high value of hBS (broad-sense heritability). Our study also showed that yield per plot had positive and significant (p<0.05) correlations with pseudo-stem diameter, leaf length, chlorophyll content, stomatal length, and root length. Principal Component Analysis showed that 82.75% of the total variance can be explained by the first three PCs viz. 57.19%, 15.27%, and 10.29% respectively.

Garlic (Allium sativum L.) is one of the relevant strategic vegetable commodities in the world. Since garlic is a widely known sterile crop, developing new cultivars has relied mainly on clonal selection. Determining genetic variability among the local accessions of garlic is a vital step in a garlic breeding program. In the presented study, 14 local garlic accessions incurred evaluation for their genetic variability based on morphological traits and SSR markers. The results showed that local accessions displayed high genetic variability based on the morphological and molecular characteristics. Principle component analysis (PCA) indicated that 75.26% of total variation came from four PCs mainly determined by the traits, viz., plant height, number of leaves, leaf length, leaf width, degree of leaf waxiness, intensity of anthocyanin coloration at the base of the pseudo-stem, bulb diameter, leaf density, cross-section shape of leaf, and the shape of the basal plate. Molecular analysis based on 10 SSR markers revealed that high allelic variation (2-12 alleles) was evident among garlic accessions
