Tell Sabi Abyad, Syria: Radiocarbon Chronology, Cultural Change, and the 8.2 ka Event

Abstract: ABSTRACT. At Tell Sabi Abyad, Syria, we obtained a robust chronology for the 7th to early 6th millennium BC, the Late Neolithic. The chronology was obtained using a large set of radiocarbon dates, analyzed by Bayesian statistics. Cultural changes observed at ~6200 BC are coeval with the 8.2 ka climate event. The inhabitation remained continuous.

“…The role of climate change on human behavior, particularly in ancient societies, is a field of significant debate, in part, because of its relevance to current discussions of global climate change. In recent years, archaeologists have played an important role in gauging the relationship between large-scale climatic changes and the cultural history of hierarchical societies (Moore and Hillman, 1992;Gill, 2000;Glantz, 2001;Hassan, 2002;Mercuri et al, 2011;Rosen, 2007;van der Plicht et al, 2011). This research points to the need for more analyses of the specific dynamics of past environments as well as the manifold causes and tempos of the social dynamics of change.…”

“…Interest in, scientific literature and projects, and meetings related to climate-human interactions have notably increased in recent years. Reconstruction of population distributions and/or analysis of occupation patterns and cultural changes in their environmental context have emerged as a major research interest (Aura et al, 2011;Banks et al, 2013;Bar-Yosef, 2015;Binford, 1999;González-Sampériz et al, 2009;Sánchez Goñi, 1966;Starkovich and Ntinou, 2015;Van der Plicht et al, 2011).…”
