Tectonic setting and U/Pb zircon dating of the plutonic Socorro Complex in the Transpressive Rio Paraíba do Sul Shear Belt, SE Brazil

Abstract: The Precambrian Rio Paraiba do Sul Shear Belt comprises a 200-km-wide anastomosing network of NE-SW trending ductile shear zones extending over 1000 km of the southeastern coast of Brazil. Granulitic, gneissic-migmatitic, and granitoid terrains as well as low-to medium-grade metavolcanosedimentary sequences are included within it. These rocks were affected by strong contractional, tangential tectonics, due to west-northwestward oblique convergence of continental blocks. Subsequent transpressional tectonics acc… Show more

“…Based on early Proterozoic model ages (2.3 to 1.8 Ga) and on 2.0 Ga U-Pb inherited isotopic memory, the leucogranites are probably derived from a crust with a long crustal residence time (Paleoproterozoic). Isotopic results agree with regional studies (Cordani et al 1988, Ebert et al 1996 that suggest an origin for the Brasiliano granitoids by reworking of the older Transamazonian basement (2.2-1.8 Ga), without extensive mantle-derived contribution.…”

“…As características do BSAL são similares às de outros corpos estudados na NSG, como por exemplo o Complexo Socorro (Ebert et al 1996) e o Batólito Pinhal-Ipuiúna (Haddad 1995). O seu estudo auxilia na definição do arco magmático da NSG, assim como no entendimento da sua evolução antes, durante e depois das colisões que culminaram com a formação das faixas Brasília Meridional e Ribeira Central, no Neoproterozoico.…”
