Technology advancing polymers and polymer composites towards sustainability: A review

Abstract: It is reported that plastic waste is accumulating in the oceans at an alarming rate. A significant proportion of this waste is plastic packaging materials, even though recycling routes and options are available to retain and reuse this oil-based resource. In addition to thermoplastic materials, fibre reinforced polymer materials are finding increased use and soon will become a concern with respect to disposal. This review presents current research and technology that aims to embrace plastics and polymer compos… Show more

“…Due to an increasing number of energy-resourceful applications that use lightweight thermoset materials and restrictions on landfill solutions throughout the EU, the development of thermoset recycling strategies has accelerated in recent years. 8,22,23 Another important driver is the value of the regained products. Regarding thermosets, most attention is given to the recycling of fiber-reinforced composites, since the fibers are generally more valuable than the matrix material, especially when carbon fibers are used.…”

“…Generally, of more interest are the following properties: mechanical, thermal, electrical conductivity, dimension stability, water absorbability, etc. [26][27][28][29][30][31]. This work intends to critically review the mechanical requirements and suggest ways of improving the mentioned properties for structural and biomedical applications.…”
