Solid waste is a global challenge that is more pronounced in developing countries such as South Africa, where its management is a major concern. The government has recently made a concerted effort to engage the public in sustainable waste management practices to resolve the crisis occasioned by the challenge. This chapter investigates waste management practices in the South African Township of Ekuphumleni and relied on a sample of 353 households to obtain some primary data with a questionnaire on the subject matter. The data collected was analyzed using “R,” and the results were presented using charts, tables, and figures. Data collected revealed that waste paper, cans, used plastics, and bottles were major waste components generated by the respondents and these wastes were generally stored unseparated domestically in plastic bags and home garbage can. Furthermore, the respondent indicated that the municipality does a door-to-door collection of their waste and they were unwilling to pay for waste collection services. While the waste management practice is in tandem with the municipal system, the study recommends that the respondents must be educated on circularity, which will ensure reducing, reusing, recycling, and recovering waste and further aid economic empowerment.

Nowadays, it is almost impossible argue about global development without immediately stopping to think about waste; it is claimed that waste materials are correlated with the growth of population as a consequence of consumption habits. The applied multivariable statistical analysis, both quantitative and qualitative of the BIG DATA of the OECD in the period of 1960-2050 of the World Bank from the decades of 1990 , and SCOPUS (1996 using applied multivariate statistics. The results reveal that consumption habits are strongly in uenced by access to public services more than by purchasing power, in addition, it was determined that the rate of subscriptions to cellular service is a catalyst for population indicators and ordinary waste, study shows the trace of evolution due to the most signi cant advance in communication technologies.

Waste management is one of the main objectives today as a tool to reduce environmental pollution and ensure the health and well-being of people. The Escuela Superior Polité cnica del Litoral (ESPOL) university campus produces around 235.00 tons/year of garbage in Ecuador. In the quest to manage waste, the campus requires an entire infrastructure for its management and sustainable use. This work aims to design a separation, valuation, and recycling centre (SVRC), through technical criteria, for the sustainable management of solid waste. The methodology consists of: i) technical evaluation of the study area to define the SVRC location, ii) design of the collection and transportation route, and iii) architectural, structural, sanitary, and reference budget design of the SVRC. The SVRC structure was designed for an area of 146.37 m 2 . This civil work will act as a temporary waste collection centre with a processing capacity of 297.00 tons/year and, mainly, will optimize the volume of waste produced on the university campus, promoting reuse and recycling. Eleven internal routes and one main route were designed for garbage transportation. The methodology used in this study contributes to a solution to solid waste management at the level of universities and municipalities, which can be replicated at the national level.
