Techno-Economic Modeling and Analysis of Redox Flow Battery Systems

Abstract: Abstract:A techno-economic model was developed to investigate the influence of components on the system costs of redox flow batteries. Sensitivity analyses were carried out based on an example of a 10 kW/120 kWh vanadium redox flow battery system, and the costs of the individual components were analyzed. Particular consideration was given to the influence of the material costs and resistances of bipolar plates and energy storage media as well as voltages and electric currents. Based on the developed model, it … Show more

“…Thus, aminimumS oC of 20 %i sa ssumed based on generic literature values. [42][43][44] However, there are also studies that report an SoC range between 5% and 95 %f or the operation of VRFBs [45] -ift his was true,c osts may be overestimated in this work. For NaNiCl, ideal operation modes of the battery are reported to be between 30% and 100 %.…”

“…When comparing the obtained values with the existing literature, [65] ag ood general agreement is observed. Also the contributions of the different components of the battery system to the total investment costs show good correlation, [66,67] with the exception of VRFB,w here high variationi sp resented in the literature, [43,59] whichi ndicates further research demandi nt his area.…”

“…One of the most important factors in practical implementation is the battery installation cost (capital cost). Noack et al [32] conducted a technoeconomic modeling analysis based on a 10 kW/120 kWh VRFB system. The costs and ratios of each component are summarized in Table 2 and Figure 11, respectively.…”

“…The cost of vanadium was a major concern factor for the development of vanadium batteries. However, recycled vanadium from oil sludge and fly ash are being proposed with good results [25,26]. Scalability and operating ease have made VRB capable of operating with high capacities and short response times.…”
