Techniques for intense-proton-beam profile measurements

Abstract: Abstract. In a collaborative effort with industry and several national laboratories, the Accelerator Production of Tritium (APT) facility and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) linac are presently being designed and developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The APT facility is planned to accelerate a 100 mA H + cw beam to 1.7 GeV and the SNS linac is planned to accelerate a 1 to 4 mA-average, H -, pulsed-beam to 1 GeV. With typical rms beam widths of 1 to 3 mm throughout much of these accelerators, … Show more

“…Such a diagnostic is planned for the low-energy linac of the APT [3]. At low energy, it is expected that the proton beam will interact with the background gas and produce sufficient fluorescence to be observed with an intensified camera.…”

“…According to Gilpatrick [6] CERN had linear wire scanners operating in the Large Electron Positron Collider (LEP), with speed between 0.1 to 2 m/s, using different materials for the wire, 36 µm C, 10 µm SiC, and 7 µm SiO2. Also Gilpatrick explains that CERN at that time operated rotatory wire scanners using 30 µm carbon fiber and wire translation velocities of 10 to 20 meters per second.…”
