Teaching the Law of Cosines in Advanced 10th Grade Geometry Textbook by Way of Problem-Based Learning in Vietnam

Abstract: The law of Cosines is an essential theorem in mathematics in particular and in science in general. The Cosine Rule allows us to calculate the length of one side of a triangle when we know two sides and the angle between the other two sides. This theorem is one of the first theorems when people want to build trigonometric systems. Because of such importance, many people studied the Law of Cosines. In Vietnam, they taught the Law of Cosines in the 10 th -grade Geometry program. It appears in Basic and Advanced s… Show more

“…The content of the thesis also partly showed the idea of problem-based teaching. In addition, Nguyen's (1996) doctoral thesis studied the practical basis of problem-solving teaching to apply it systematically to teaching anatomy, physiology, and human hygiene in Grade 9. Furthermore, in the book Teaching Problem Solving in Biology (Continuous training material for high school teachers in the 1997 -2000 cycle), Nguyen et al (2000) presented the characteristics of problem-solving teaching, lesson design, and organization of problem-solving teaching in biology at high schools.…”

“…The education applied in learning was the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model, i.e. teachers guide students to overcome obstacles and difficulties in learning, gradually clarify problems, and help students to learn positively and proactively so that students are not dependent, students create knowledge for themselves, create and develop their understanding sustainably and creatively (Nguyen, 2019).…”
