Teaching teamwork during the Neonatal Resuscitation Program: a randomized trial

Abstract: Objective: To add a team training and human error curriculum to the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and measure its effect on teamwork. We hypothesized that teams that received the new course would exhibit more teamwork behaviors than those in the standard NRP course.Study design: Interns were randomized to receive NRP with team training or standard NRP, then video recorded when they performed simulated resuscitations at the end of the day-long course. Outcomes were assessed by observers blinded to study … Show more

“…Die Leistung von Reanimationsteams verbessert sich in realen Reanimationen, aber auch in simulierten ALS-Krankenhausszenarien, wenn spezielle Team-oder Führungstrai-nings in die ALS-Kurse integriert werden [937][938][939][940][941]. Im Gegensatz zum SzenarioTraining ohne Debriefing erfolgen wäh-rend des Debriefings Reflexion und Lernen [942].…”

“…Collaboration is a synergistic, voluntary combining of individual contributions for a collective goal (Hughes & Jones, 2011;Thomas et al, 2007). Viability of collaboration can be threatened, such as by interpersonal conflict, poor strategy, or selfish manoeuvring (Chen, Ünal, Leung, & Xin, 2016;Topping, 2010).…”

“…Clinical experience alone has not been associated with improved team performance [5]; therefore, training programs are focusing on team dynamics during medical crises as a point of improvement. Since team dynamics can be taught and practiced in simulated environments [6,7], various types of simulation have been developed – computer-based, manikin, and standardized patient [2,3,8]. These training tools may not be available in many hospitals and training facilities in low-middle income countries.…”

“…Since interprofessional teamwork has been linked with patient outcomes [1] and team dynamics can be improved with simulation [6,7], we set out to determine if team dynamics can be improved via remote simulation in resource-limited areas. The original purpose of the simulations was to assess the effectiveness of CERTAIN-ELITE training; however, we wanted to utilize this pre-existing platform to assess the effects of remote simulation on team dynamics.…”
