Teaching Surgical Model Development in Research by Using Situated Learning and Instructional Scaffolding

Abstract: Animal surgical models are important in the advancement of biomedical science and applied research. Both the development and refinement of these models, particularly complex ones, hold multiple challenges, including design, translatability, and technical training. Design and translatability are optimized by the use of team science and the assembly of a diverse, expert clinical and research team. Multidisciplinary teams comprising scientists, engineers, physicians, and veterinarians are common in the refinement… Show more

“…Situated learning exploration made the students master the basic knowledge and basic application of these key points and difficulties more firmly in blood physiology. Our results was consisted with previous reports in medical education [3][4][5]. This better performance in our study adds merit to the hypothesis that knowledge acquisition and retention are better while using situated learning in blood physiology.…”

“…By engaging with the simulated environment, students became more confident in their ability to share knowledge with the public and effectively overcame their obstacles and fear of oral expression. Kelly et al (2019) integrated learning scaffolding with a situated learning environment to provide students with the opportunity to learn in a hierarchical manner and to think and act like a surgeon. After 6 months of guidance and assistance, the students' surgical operation skills improved.…”
