Resumo O corpo humano, no decorrer da história, foi objeto de estudo de diversas áreas da saúde, que apresentam discursos sobre o seu uso e forma de existir. Este artigo surgiu de um recorte de uma dissertação de mestrado que teve como objetivo compreender a visão de corpo para os profissionais de fisioterapia. Foi utilizado o método fenomenológico crítico por meio do pedido disparador “me fale o que é corpo para você”. O estudo se apoiou na perspectiva teórica e fenomenológica de Merleau-Ponty. Alguns profissionais descreveram uma percepção sobre corpo voltada aos aspectos físicos e biológicos, contemplando esse objeto ora como estrutura, ora como meio de locomoção, ou mesmo como máquina que serve de abrigo para diferentes fases da vida. Outros consideraram o corpo como um todo, a partir de uma integralidade além da noção mecanicista. Contudo, ao se depararem na prática com ideias que fogem ao modelo mecanicista, os profissionais encontraram dificuldade devido a uma formação acadêmica que não considera modos divergentes de entender o corpo. Ressalta-se a necessidade de uma maior discussão do conceito de corpo na fisioterapia, principalmente sobre os aspectos ligados a noções que ultrapassem a normatividade biologizante.

Celebration, frustration, contestation and imagination all manifest themselves when examining the evolution of the field of Medical and Health Humanities (MHH) at the University of Cape Town (UCT). That this field has been growing at the same time as access to, inclusion in, and social justice issues linked to higher education have come under the spotlight has the potential to shape how we think and plan for the future of the field. Doing this will require treks up hills, journeys through difficult histories and dynamic dances in-between disciplines.This article examines MHH at UCT broadly, referring to projects and programmes that are underway primarily in the humanities and health sciences faculties. From this overview, the article specifically examines the curricula changes introduced in the Faculty of Health Sciences inspired by MHH and the author’s interest in historical consciousness. It describes current points of intervention in physiotherapy and MBChB undergraduate curricula; and through short-term special study modules that have allowed those interested in MHH to explore relationships between health and healing and art, music, writing, yoga, PhotoVoice, drama, drawing and complex histories.It discusses some of the challenges of introducing humanities teaching into health sciences curricula; and some of the tensions that result from the meeting of divergent epistemologies and pedagogies. The article considers if, and how, MHH might engage with social (in)justice, and inclusions and exclusions and potentially offer a balm to soothe the bruising effects of oppressive histories and a hegemonically hierarchical present.

Background The approach to the education and professional advancement of physiotherapists is particularly relevant today. To date, no studies have compared the perceptions of physiotherapists regarding professional issues in geographically close European countries such as Poland and Germany. Therefore, this study’s purpose was to compare Polish and German physiotherapists’ perceptions related to their profession, entry-level education, and career opportunities. Methods We recruited 565 physiotherapists from Poland and 560 physiotherapists from Germany. An opinion polling method based on a questionnaire was applied in the study. The survey was conducted in 48 facilities located throughout the territories of the two countries. The assessment focused on the following three issues: 1) professional education (form and content of educational programs, organizational aspects, and effects of education); 2) professional development and career opportunities; and 3) the relationship between years of service and perceptions of professional education, career satisfaction and advancement opportunities. Results German respondents rated specific aspects of their education, development opportunities and professional careers more highly than their Polish counterparts (p = 0.001). A highly significant negative correlation was identified in both groups between all the assessed aspects of professional education and years of service (0.9 ≤ |R| < 1, p = 0.001). Conclusions Opinions on their professions expressed by physiotherapists from closely neighboring countries, namely, Poland and Germany, were surprisingly disparate. Compared to their Polish colleagues, German physiotherapists viewed their experiences more favorably vis-a-vis entry-level education, career opportunities, and professional status. Further study is needed to establish whether these findings reflect actual differences, sampling bias, or other factors.
