“…Furthermore, support from colleagues both in formal and informal settings were also identified as being important for the professional development of perceptors. In agreement with previous studies, continuity in preceptorship was identified as an important factor for establishing personal workplace relationships (Brunstad and Hjalmhult 2014;Gilmour et al 2013;Hauck et al 2017;Thunes and Sekse 2015), for understanding workplace culture (Gilmour et al 2013;Hauck et al 2017) and to not have to repeat already acquired learning goals (Hauck et al 2017). “…Some of these findings correspond to other studies that described the students' perceptions on what increased their confidence. For example, students need to feel accepted and included in the ward (Brunstad and Hjalmhult 2014;Thunes and Sekse 2015) which was facilitated by more practical and hands-on learning situations (Hauck et al 2017;Hughes and Fraser 2011;Licqurish and Seibold 2008;Thunes and Sekse 2015). This corresponds to Banduras (1982) who stated that one learns through observation, imitation, and availability of good role models.…”

“…Some midwives in the study feel left out in matters of personal development as they revealed that they are not awarded opportunities to attend peer symposia, such as annual midwifery symposia held in different provinces in the country. Hauck et al (2017:47) recommended the importance of professional development support and access to senior midwives within the clinical environment in order to ensure quality and sustainability of midwifery workforce. The utilisation of temporary employed midwives is a positive measure to relieve them of their heavy workloads.…”

“…In the context of midwifery in Western Australia, Hauck, et al (2017) stated that midwife precepts play a role in guiding and supporting midwifery students during clinical placements and are responsible for ensuring quality patient care. Support by precepts during clinical experiences for students and recent graduates should facilitate the integration of theory into practice to build the knowledge, skills, and attributes essential for professional practice.…”
