Teachers’ Thoughts on Student Decision Making During Engineering Design Lessons

Abstract: Abstract:In this paper, I share the results of a study of teachers' ideas about student decision-making at entry into a professional development program to integrate engineering into their instruction. The framework for the Engineering Design Process (EDP) was based on a Challenge-Based Learning (CBL) model. The EDP embedded within the CBL model suggests teachers should provide opportunities for students to make decisions throughout the design process. The differentiation consolidation decision-making framewor… Show more

“…Decisions in a problem-solving situation are made in a dual-space: before (prediction of the result) and after the decision (analysis of the real results of the prediction); hence, decision-making involves considering multiple scenarios pre and post (Meyer, 2018). This study aims to enhance Meyer's proposal for decision making by including the schematic representation of the situation (mental model) in the pre-phase, and the selection of an appropriate justification of the decision (argumentation schema).…”

“…The CEEMS CBL approach [46][47][48][49][50][51] has its roots in the seminal work freely disseminated by Apple, Inc. [52]. In this version of CBL, students begin with a big idea, such as public health.…”

“…Wadhwa (2016)and Mohamad and Hussein (2018). Meyer (2018) also highlighted that the decision-making by students will be based on their purpose and intention. PHEI in the industry need to understand the students' needs and wants beside the capability of them to pay for the fees.…”
