Given growing systemic investment in the designing of new learning spaces, researching the relationships between physical space and learning and teaching processes is imperative. Researching innovative learning spaces is challenging, therefore the aim of this paper is to demonstrate a pedagogical characterization based on a three‐dimensional theoretical framework. The study presented here includes three schools in the process of implementing a constructivist pedagogical change involving gradual development of educational intiatives including the redesigning of learning spaces. We characterized learning environments by space, pedagogical practices and curricular potential and explored the relationships between space, active learning and the development of high‐order thinking skills (HOT). Characterization of teaching and learning processes was based on interviews with 12 teachers, 478 class observations and analysis of 307 learning tasks. The findings indicate a higher expression of active learning in the innovative learning spaces compared with the traditional spaces. Nevertheless, results demonstrated difficulties in designing constructivist learning tasks and developing HOT skills, with relatively low encouragement for problem solving skills and critical thinking. Learning tasks were characterized by low cognitive complexity. This study provides a new methodology for investigating teaching and learning processes in innovative learning spaces.

El mundo globalizado exige profesionales capacitados no solo teóricamente, sino que demuestren capacidades de análisis, síntesis, reflexión e investigación, entre otros; por ello, se hace necesaria en la formación del educando el desarrollo de capacidades investigativas, que estás se presenten desde la educación básica para que lo acompañen a lo largo de su formación, y se establezcan como parte de su cotidianeidad. En ese sentido el propósito de la presente indagación radica en la exploración de diversos artículos científicos, así como sus aportes, además de determinar en qué medida han impactado en el desarrollo de los educandos la adquisición de las capacidades investigativas. Por ello, la metodología empleada fue de revisión sistemática de investigaciones en torno al tema, aplicando la inducción, análisis, síntesis, y deducción; conforme a ello, se seleccionaron 40 artículos provenientes de bases de datos como: Dialnet, Redalyc, Scielo, Scopus, Web of Science, Springer y ScienceDirect, empleando el diagrama de flujo PRISMA. Finalmente, la indagación evidenció que el desarrollo de las capacidades investigativas en estudiantes de educación básica promueve el apego por el conocimiento y la participación de aquellos en la búsqueda de soluciones a problemas de su entorno sociocultural; además, las capacidades investigativas se presentan de manera transversal en todas las áreas del conocimiento que debe desarrollar el educando a lo largo de la educación básica.

The use of instruction tools that only explains the instruction material, but does not know the extent to which students' understanding causes the instruction process to be less than optimal. This study aims to find out the development process, feasibility, and the influence of using student worksheet based on higher order thinking skills in improving Mathematics learning outcomes at MIN 3 Tulungagung and SDI Qurrota A'yun Ngunut Tulungagung. This study uses the development research model of Borg, and Gall. The results show that: (1) The development of HOTS-based worksheets begins with preparing instruction materials in accordance with the Core Competencies and Basic Competencies listed in the 2013 Curriculum.Furthermore, the researcher makes examples of HOTS questions that are in accordance with the material that has been presented, making questions individual and group practice questions and then make competency test questions at the end of the chapter. (2) The worksheets based on HOTS are suitable for use in improving Mathematics learning outcomes. This can be seen from the results of due diligence by media and material experts. (3) There is an influence of using HOTS-based worksheets as indicated by the significant difference in learning outcomes between the experimental class that does instruction using HOTS-based worksheets and the control class that does instruction without HOTS-based worksheets. This is based on the data from the t-test results in which sig-2 0.040 <0.050 is obtained.
