The influence of teaching motivations on student engagement in an online learning environment in China

Given the importance of student engagement for educational success, it is essential to explore how teachers can stimulate student engagement in online learning environment. However, relatively little research drawing from self-determination theory has examined the links between teaching motivations and student engagement. To this end, this study was conducted to survey 414 Chinese college students’ perceptions of teaching motivations, their own intrinsic and extrinsic motivations during the learning process, as well as their engagement with online learning. The findings indicated that the survey had satisfactory validity and internal consistency. Structural equation model revealed the interrelationships between autonomy-supportive teaching motivations, controlling teaching motivations, student intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, and student engagement. The results showed that in online learning environments, autonomy-supportive teaching motivations and student intrinsic motivation were positively related to student engagement. Unexpectedly, controlling teaching motivations and student extrinsic motivation had no significant effect on student engagement. Moreover, the mediating effects of student intrinsic motivation including perceived autonomy, competence, and relatedness offered a deeper understanding of the association between autonomy-supportive teaching motivations and student engagement. The main findings and practical implications together are discussed in depth. Implications for practice or policy: Teachers could adopt autonomy-supportive teaching strategies and stimulate students’ intrinsic motivation as they have shown to be positive factors for student engagement. Developers and educators could enhance student engagement through nurturing inner motivational resources in online learning environment. Researchers could verify more factors that influence student engagement and clarify how they could be manipulated in future studies.

Short story appreciation is a literary appreciation taught early from elementary schools to universities. Short stories contain various lessons, including moral, religious, nationalism, and other didactic values. The current digital era encourages the use of technology to facilitate short story learning. Technology is expected to motivate students to learn. The short story didactic application (CERDIK) is an android-based learning application that can support short story learning in this digital era. This paper discussed the influence of CERDIK and short story videos on students' motivation in the study of Indonesian prose fiction appreciation. The respondents consist of students of the students of a language and literature education program at a university in Bandung. The results showed a unidirectional relationship between the use of CERDIK and students' learning motivation. In addition, there is a positive unidirectional relationship between the second variable, which is the use of short story videos, and student learning motivation. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of CERDIK and short story videos can increase students' learning motivation in Indonesian prose fiction appreciation.

This study aims to apply digital learning media in the form of Adobe Animate CC in learning mathematics. This research is a quantitative research with a comparative approach to compare learning outcomes based on the application of interactive learning media Adobe Animate CC. The research population was all junior high schools in Bengkalis Regency, while the sample was a portion of the schools taken purposively according to the purpose of the research. The data collection tool is a learning achievement test and a checklist to observe student learning motivation in class while studying with Adobe Animate CC. Data analysis in this study used descriptive statistics, t-test and One Way Anova. The results of the analysis show that there are significant differences in student learning outcomes in the experimental class using Adobe Animate CC learning media and the control class using conventional learning. There were significant differences in learning motivation in the experimental class at the first meeting, second meeting, third meeting and fourth meeting. Adobe Animate CC learning media can improve learning outcomes and motivation of junior high school students in Bengkalis Regency, Riau Province.
