Taxonomy of Cocoons and Puparia, and their Contents, of Canadian Parasites of Diprion hercyniae (Htg.) (Hymenoptera: Diprionidae)

Abstract: INTRODUCTIONThis is the second in a series of papers on the taxonomy of the cocoons and puparia, cast larval skins, and other iremains of parasitic Hymenoptera and Diptera that are found in or near the remains of parasitized hosts after the parasites have emerged. The structures of tz~onomic sipificance in the separation of the species were described and discussed in a previous paper (Finlayson, 1960). The present paper deals with the known Canadian parasites of the European spruce sawfly, Diprion hercyniae (H… Show more

“…Apparent parasitism by C. sublatus varied from 1 to 57%; the higher percentages (i.e., 32 to 57% ) occurred in samples of fewer than 50 pupae. Finlayson's ( 1960) description of the emergence hole of C. pedalis from the cocoon stage of Diprion hercyniae (Htg.) Generally only a small number of pupae could be found in outbreaks that had been decimated by starvation, disease, and/or egg parasitism the preceding year.…”
