Taxonomy and systematics of the herichthyins (Cichlidae: Tribe Heroini), with the description of eight new Middle American Genera

Abstract: In recent years great strides have been made for improving our understanding of the evolutionary relationships among neotropical cichlids, particularly within the clade Heroini and its crown clade the herichthyins. Most phylogenetic studies have largely converged on congruent topologies for relationships among species and major lineages within the herichthyins. One major aspect missing from previous studies of these cichlids is a formal taxonomic revision, including the redefining of genera. Based on analysis … Show more

“…Furthermore, separate molecular analysis by Concheiro-Pérez et al (2007), De la Maza-Benignos et al (2015), Hulsey et al (2004), López-Fernández et al (2010), León-Romero et al (2012), Mejía et al (2015), Magalhaes et al (2015), McMahan et al (2015) and Oldfield et al (2015) support the monophyly of the Nosferatu + Herichthys clade as well as separation between both genera. Moreover, the separate analysis of the mitochondrial gene Cox1 by León-Romero et al (2012), De la Maza-Benignos et al (2015), and Mejía et al (2015) reveal the existence of three clades in Nosferatu: 1) the bartoni clade (= phylogenetic group I sensu Mejía et al, 2015); 2) the steindachneri clade (= phylogenetic group II sensu Mejía et al, 2015); and 3) the pantostictus clade (in the study by León-Romero et al (2012) and Mejía et al (2015) some of the lineages of N. pantostictus are misidentified as H. cf.…”

“…Records of the Mexican tetra in Chiapas probably contain misidentifications as mentioned by Lozano-Vilano and Contreras-Balderas (1987) and Ornelas-García et al (2008), thus supporting the absence of this species in Southern Mexico. We have included Important and recent taxonomic changes made in the family Cichlidae by McMahan et al (2015) and Říčan et al (2016), the family Poeciliidae by Palacios et al (2016) and the family Profundulidae by Morcillo et al (2016).…”
