“…The ventral view of basal region of female genitalia has been used to discriminate species in a genus of leafhoppers by some other workers ( Greene 1971 , Leal et al 2009 ). Greene (1971) employed the characters of base of the valvulae I for distinguishing species of deltocephaline genus Psammotettix .…”

“…Based on the present studies, as stated by Greene, the female genitalia characters did not delimit species as precisely as do the aedeagus characters of the male, but the female genitalia such as ventral view of basal region of valvulae I can be used in combination with edge of abdominal sternite VII or other female characters to separate species. Leal et al (2009) also provided the ventral view of basal portion of female genitalia in sharpshooter genus Scoposcartula and discovered the new characters on base of the valvulae which named prevalvifer area and the sclerotised wall. The present study revealed the occurrence of peculiar lobes articulating with valvulae I, which can be added to the combination of features that distinguish species in the genus.…”

“…Thus, the latter could be considered more useful than the former for the recognition of genera and species. However, there are still few studies dealing with the comparative morphology of the female genitalia of the Cicadellidae (e.g., Nielson 1965;Hamilton 1970;Hill 1970;Davis 1975;Mejdalani 1995Mejdalani , 1998Hummel et al 2006;Zahniser & Dietrich 2008;Leal et al 2009). The data presented in these studies, although preliminary, highlighted various features of potential taxonomic interest in the female genitalia.…”

“…For comparative purposes, the basal portion of the valvulae is usually observed in ventral view. Leal et al (2009) described an interspecifically variable "prevalvifer area" located at the base of the first valvulae in the genus Scoposcartula. Although we did not find a "prevalvifer area" in the first valvulae of Erythrogonia, our results demonstrate the occurrence of interspecific variations in the form of the basal portion, including the presence of distinct projections (e.g., E. phoenicea, Figs 5 and 6) and concavities (e.g., E. sexgutatta, Figs 57-59).…”

“…Although the New World Cicadellini are a highly diverse and economically important group, species‐level phylogenetic studies within this tribe are rare (e.g. Draeculacephala Ball: Dietrich, 1994; Parathona Melichar: Cavichioli, 1997; Lissoscarta Stål: Felix, 1999; Balacha Melichar: Takiya & Mejdalani, 2004; Scoposcartula Young: Leal et al ., 2009). Here we present a phylogenetic analysis of Apogonalia species based on 147 morphological characters.…”
