Taxonomic revision of Rhinella granulosa species group (Amphibia, Anura, Bufonidae), with a description of a new species

Abstract: An extensive review of Rhinella granulosa species group was conducted based on external morphological and morphometrical characteristics. Data set included 8700 specimens deposited in 35 collections, representing 865 localities, from South and Central America. Twelve species were recognized for the group, one described as new; they are:

“…For instance, Rhinella veredas, R. cerradensis, R. rubescens, Eupemphix nattereri, Physalaemus centralis, and Phyllomeduza azurea occur in savannas areas from Uruçuí and Ribeiro Gonçalves municipalities , present study), being considered species typical from Cerrado. In contrast, Rhinella mirandaribeiroi, Dendropsophus rubicundulus, Proceratophrys goyana, Leptodactylus pustulatus have wider distribution in the state, occurring in Cerrado areas but also in coastal zone and ecotonal areas of Caatinga and Cerrado (see Silva et al 2007, Loebmann & Mai 2008, Loebmann et al 2010b, Narvaes & Rodrigues 2009). For the Caatinga endemics, Rhinella jimi occurs in the north of the state in the coastal zone (Silva et al 2007, Loebmann & Mai 2008 Valdujo et al (2012) for amphibians, however we believe that new inventories, especially at the border of the states of Tocantins and Maranhão on the southwestern region, can substantially increase the diversity in Piauí.…”

“…This species is distributed in different countries in the Neotropical region, common in secondary forest and open areas (Narvaes and Rodrigues, 2009). Ctenophryne geayi is a Microhylidae with range length 32-43 mm in males and 42-55 mm in females (La Marca et al, 2010).…”
