Trial-based functional analysis (TBFA) is an accurate and ecologically valid assessment of challenging behavior. Further, there is evidence to suggest that individuals with minimal exposure to behavior analytic assessment methodology (e.g., parents, teachers) can quickly be trained to conduct TBFAs in naturalistic settings (e.g., schools, homes). Notwithstanding, the response effort associated with training development can be prohibitive and may preclude incorporation of TBFA into practice. To address this, we developed a partially automated training package, intended to increase the methodology’s accessibility. Using a multiple-probe across skills design, we assessed the degree to which the package increased caregiver accuracy in (a) implementing TBFAs, (b) interpreting TBFA outcomes, and (c) managing TBFA data. Six caregivers completed this study and all demonstrated proficiency following training, first during structured roleplays and again during assessment of their child’s actual challenging behavior.

Behavioral Skills Training to Increase Appropriate Reactions of Adolescent Males in Residential Treatment

Adolescents in secured residential facilities may engage in excess behavior immediately following verbal directives or corrective statements from staff. Excess behavior may include verbal aggression, indices of disrespect (e.g., eye rolling, grunting, and obscene gestures), or even physical aggression. These excess behaviors may evoke further directives or corrective statements from staff that, in turn, escalate the adolescent’s excess behavior and can produce undesirable effects for both the adolescent (e.g., loss of privileges) and staff members (e.g., increased burn out). Teaching detained adolescents to respond appropriately to staff directives and corrective statements may produce large collateral changes in the way staff interact with adolescents in detention facilities. These changes could be conceptualized as a behavioral cusp. We used behavioral skills training to teach 11 adolescent males to respond appropriately to staff directives. All 11 students showed low percentages of trials with appropriate reactions in baseline and high percentages of trials with appropriate reactions during treatment and generalization sessions. Further, two students showed maintenance of the skill 1 month and 5 months following treatment.

Promoting the Emergence of Advanced Knowledge (PEAK) direct training is an evidence-based curriculum with extensive research. Treatment integrity is one of the critical components of an effective treatment. In developing countries where training opportunities are scarce, providing precise training poses a challenge. The current study evaluated the effectiveness of behavioral skills training (BST) role-play to train three staff members to implement the PEAK-DT language curriculum, using discrete trial teaching (DTT) with three learners with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Not only did the staff members implement the programs with high treatment integrity, but the learners also improved their performance on targeted skills. In addition, this study considered maintenance and generalization of the skills learned. Overall, data show that the BST role-play was successful as the staff members enhanced the skills of three learners with autism.
