Targeting Staff Treatment Integrity of the PEAK Relational Training System Using Behavioral Skills Training

Abstract: PEAK is a language curriculum dedicated to expanding language via the science of behavior analysis. The present study sought to evaluate the extent to which a behavioral skills training (BST) program impacted treatment integrity for six direct care staff implementing the Promoting the Emergence of Advanced Knowledge Relational Training System (PEAK) with six individuals with autism. We used a 2-h workshop-like Behavioral Skills Training (BST; instruction, modeling, rehearsal, and feedback) targeting PEAK treat… Show more

“…Their recommendation was that future research deliver the training’s content using an empirically supported training framework appropriate for adult learners known as behavior skills training (BST; Miltenberger, 2012 ). Specifically, they recommended trainers not only expose trainees to PowerPoint content (i.e., instructions, video models), but to also provide them with opportunities to practice each condition of the analysis and receive corrective feedback until achieving empirically verifiable mastery criteria (e.g., Drifke, et al, 2017 ; Hahs & Jarynowski, 2019 ; Miltenberger, 2012 ; Parsons et al, 2012 , 2013 ).…”

“…In this way, an adolescent's appropriate reactions can (a) decrease contact with immediate aversive events, (b) increase contact with immediate reinforcement and (c) increase contact with delayed, but desirable events. Researchers have used BST to teach a variety of skills to individuals from various populations (e.g., Dogan et al, 2017;Giles, Swain, Quinn, & Weifenbach, 2017;Hahs & Jarynowski, 2018;Homlitas, Rosales, & Candel, 2014;Miles & Wilder, 2009;O'Handley, Ford, Radley, Helbig, & Wimberly, 2016;Sarokoff & Sturmey, 2004;Seiverling, Williams, Sturmey, & Hart, 2012;Stannis, Crosland, Miltenberger, & Valbuena, 2018;Stewart, Carr, & LeBlanc, 2007). Of particular relevance to the current study is the use of BST to teach anger management skills.…”

“…With few credentialed ABA professionals in Brazil, the need for evidence-based and userfriendly curricula, and efficient and effective teaching methods is needed for training staff members to effectively serve their clients. This study sought to evaluate the effects of BST on implementation of the PEAK training system in an ABA clinic in Brazil, replicating the Belisle et al (2016) and Hahs and Jarynowski (2019) studies while adding a generalization probe in order to determine if skills would transfer to new protocols.…”

“…Although research has supported the effectiveness of the PEAK (Dixon et al, 2017;Dunkel-Jackson & Dixon, 2018;Dixon, Belisle, Stanley, & Rowsey, 2018), the program's success rests on staff implementation of the protocol. The PEAK curriculum was designed to be user-friendly for parents, teachers, and direct-care staff, in addition to behavior analysts and other trained professionals, however training is required to establish the proper instructional skills to teach each of the skill domains (Hahs & Jarynowski, 2019).…”
