Tape Casting Thin, Continuous, Homogenous, and Flexible Tapes of ZrB2

Abstract: Using an organic solvent-based formulation, flexible and homogeneous ZrB 2 tapes were cast for potential use as advanced aerospace exploration vehicles. Dispersant concentrations were optimized for attrition-milled ZrB 2 powder using gravitational sedimentation and viscosity measurements. Tape cast slurry formulations with varying amounts of binder (6-8 vol%), plasticizer (7-11 vol%), and solids loading (20-23 vol%) were used to optimize the casting slurry. An optimal slurry formulation was determined based on… Show more

“…This is reflected in the exothermic peak around 365 °C, which is followed by a minor weight loss up to 450 °C consequent to the binder burnout (see the diffused peak at 450 °C in DTA curve). The TG curve shows that a negligible weight loss (~0.4%) above 600 °C as reflected in the slow ascending of exothermic curve, which was believed to be due to the gradual combustion of residual carbon24252627. For alumina, a total weight loss of ∼11% is observed from 190 °C to 550 °C as shown in Fig 3(b).…”

“…It is interesting to note that final tape casting slurry exhibited a shear thinning pseudo plastic behavior. This pseudo plastic shear thinning behavior is essential for tape casting slurry because the slurry experiences shear force under the action of the moving blade/carrier [35]. The shear thinning behavior is a consequence of the gradual breaking of the structures formed.…”

“…It is also used to identify the optimal concentration of the dispersant [35]. Good dispersed slurry is identified by slower rate of settling of the particles and higher final sediment density [34].…”

“…Besides, there are also some microstructure tailoring methods to prepare textured ZrB 2 -based ceramics with improved properties, such as hot-forging (HF), 14) templated grain growth (TGG) 15) and strong magnetic field alignment (SMFA). 16), 17) The crystal structure of ZrB 2 belongs to hexagonal system, so it has the tendency to form anisotropic microstructure and demonstrate anisotropic properties in ZrB 2 -based ceramics with tailored microstructures, which is similar to other ceramics, such as Si 3 N 4 .…”
