Tanshinone IIA ameliorates lead (Pb)-induced cognitive deficits and oxidative stress in a rat pup model

et al.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: Chronic lead (Pb) exposure affects the developing central nervous system, whereas Tanshinone IIA (TSA) improves cognitive defi cits. METHODS: In this study, we investigated the effects of TSA against lead-induced neurotoxicity in a rat pup model. A total of thirty two healthy male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups: lead-treated group, lead plus TSA-treated 1 group, lead plus TSA-treated 2 group, and controls. After a 4-week lead exposure, memory function was determined using Morris … Show more

“…As a neurotoxic agent in different study models, Pb caused oxidative stress, synaptic and cholinergic dysfunction, neuroinflammation, autophagy, apoptosis, cognitive deficits, and neuronal cell death (Phyu and Tangpong, 2014; Ye et al, 2015; Chibowska et al, 2016; Meng et al, 2016; Tang et al, 2017; Xue et al, 2017). Pb-induced neurotoxicity may be based on the modulation of glutamate receptors, especially iGluRs.…”

“…It is reported that quercetin can resist apoptosis and protect neurons by increasing X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein Using pentylenetetrazole induced juvenile zebrafish and mouse epilepsy models, it was found that tanshinone IIa may play an anticonvulsant role by activating the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) signaling pathway. Tanshinone IIa can also protect against lead-induced neurobehavioral defects in rats (36). In addition, our research group's previous study found that tanshinone IIa may alleviate epileptic seizures in epileptic rats by regulating the brain-derived neurotrophic factor-Tyrosine Kinase receptor B (BDNF TrkB) pathway, enhance the expression of hippocampal synaptic remodeling proteins, syn and PSD-95, in epileptic rats, regulate synaptic plasticity, and subsequently improve the cognitive function of epileptic rats.…”

“…Alternatively, panretinal photo coagulation or even vitrectomy can be implemented in the early stage to avoid irreversible changes of vision acuity in patients ( 11 ). So far, however, there is no particularly efficient agent in drug therapies, especially the medical treatment for patients in early and middle stage, in clinical practices ( 12 ).…”
