Tannery Solid Waste to Treat Toxic Liquid Wastes: A New Holistic Paradigm

Abstract: Leather processing involves conversion of putrescible hide/skin into nonputrescible leather. This results in generation of both solid and liquid wastes. Solid waste disposal is increasingly becoming a huge challenge to tanners due to paucity of landfill sites and strict environmental legislations worldwide. Hence, finding a holistic solution to the tannery solid waste disposal problem is a challenge for researchers. In this context, use of solid waste for treatment of toxic pollutants in liquid waste is emergi… Show more

“…The % solid waste generated is as follows: green fleshings 10%, limed fleshing 35%; trimmings 7-12% on the weight of raw hide; chrome trimmings 5.5-6% on the weight of hide; chrome shaving 10% on the weight of raw hide; chrome splits account for 4%-6%; buffing dust 0.2-0.4%; skin trimming 1-1.2%; and hair 10-12% on the weight of animal [17,18]. In this work, an attempt has been made to convert tannery biomass waste into bio-adsorbent and to use the same for chromium(VI) removal.…”
