TanDEM-X for mass balance of glaciers and subglacial volcanic activities

Abstract: The TanDEM-X satellite mission through its bistatic formation provides high horizontal and vertical resolution topographic data. Multi temporal TanDEM-X acquisitions allow short term analysis of variations of the earth surface elevation which in turn can be converted to volume changes. We are investigating the capabilities of the TanDEM-X data to detect and map short term changes at glacier surfaces in two different situations. One study case is Jorge Montt outlet glacier of the South Patagonia Icefield known … Show more

“…The morphological study comparing DEMs acquired before and after the eruption is based on (i) satellite imagery and results from the TanDEM-X and WorldView-2 satellite missions and (ii) field data attained at key locations by camera drones and terrestrial laser scanning (TLS). A detailed description of the TanDEM-X data can be found in Floricioiu et al (2015) and Rossi et al (2016), and of our field data in Müller et al 2017, respectively.…”

“…The structural overview presented here is based on the analysis of satellite imagery and the results of the TanDEM-X satellite mission (Floricioiu et al, 2015;Rossi et al, 2016). For further details on the TanDEM-X data, we refer to those publications.…”

“…Due to the large dimensions, a good overview of the morphological expressions of the graben is given by satellitebased DEMs, such as those that were earlier presented (Floricioiu et al, 2015;Rossi et al, 2016) or in our study. Given the identified reactivation of preexisting faults (Ruch et al, 2016), we can only speculate about their offset prior to our measurement campaign.…”
