Tandem multipass Fabry-Perot interferometer for Brillouin scattering

Abstract: A new design of a plane mirror Fabry-Perot interferometer with the mirror blanks freely supported by horizontal rings is described. Special attention is paid to the surface flatness and dielectric coatings of the mirrors. It is shown that any two piezoelectrically scanned Fabry-Perot interferometers can be synchronized in tandem operation using simple optics and standard electronic driving and stabilization equipment. Applications of the tandem system to Brillouin scattering are given. The observation of Brill… Show more

“…However, strong variations between theoretical and experimental multipass contrast have been observed in other implementations also. 21,22 There are other multipass etalon implementations with far higher contrast, e.g., Ͼ170 dB, 21 but on the cost of much lower peak-transmission, e.g., 10% in this example. Directly scaling the 170 dB contrast to an acceptable peaktransmission of 60% by using a hypothetical double-pass configuration would result in just 38 dB contrast.…”

“…Achieving both synchronization and constant increment of the mirrors' distances is technically challenging when the interferometers are scanned separately (Dil et al 1981). One ingenious design of a tandem multi-pass interferometer has been developed by Sandercock (1978Sandercock ( , 1980 (Fig.…”

“…These ambiguities are avoided in the tandem etalon arrangement invented by Sandercock [1][2][3][4][5] ͑see also Ref. 6 for a different approach͒. Multipass operation allows for a high contrast of better than 10 10 enabling detection of elastic and magnetic surface excitations even in metallic systems with a sensitivity down to the monolayer regime, as shown for the case of spin waves in Co films.…”
