Social media is now the primary form of communication between internet users and has soared in popularity, which has directly impacted the spread of the phenomenon of fake news. Fake news is not only a widespread phenomenon; it is also problematic and dangerous for society. The aim of this study is to understand the phenomenon of fake news better. The study utilised a structural modelling equation in order to identify how Polish society perceives the problem of fake news and assess the extent to which it trusts content that is published on the internet. The key goal was to determine what factors have the most significant influence on the verification of information being viewed on the internet. By deploying the partial least squares method of validation, SmartPLS3 software was used to process the survey results. The strongest positive effect on information verification behaviour was found to be fake news awareness, which was followed by the intention to share information. The research did not consider any clear connections that may exist between the nature of fake news and its recipient; however, much of the fake news that appears on the internet is political in nature. The study can be used by news reporting companies and provides preliminary information for developers responsible for running social media sites as well as users who want to combat and limit the spread of fake news online. This study expands on the available literature related to fake news by identifying the effects on information verification behaviour of fake news awareness and the intention to share data.

Crowdfunding platforms remain understudied as conduits for ideological struggle. While other social media platforms may enable the expression of hateful and harmful ideas, crowdfunding can actively facilitate their enaction through financial support. In addressing such risks, crowdfunding platforms attempt to mitigate complicity but retain legitimacy. That is, ensuring their fundraising tools are not exploited for intolerant, violent or hate‐based purposes, yet simultaneously avoiding restrictive policies that undermine their legitimacy as ‘open’ platforms. Although social media platforms are routinely scrutinized for enabling misinformation, hateful rhetoric and extremism, crowdfunding has largely escaped critical inquiry, despite being repeatedly implicated in amplifying such threats. Drawing on the ‘Freedom Convoy’ movement as a case study, this article employs critical discourse analysis to trace how crowdfunding platforms reveal their underlying values in privileging either collective safety or personal liberty when hosting divisive causes. The radically different policy decisions adopted by crowdfunding platforms GoFundMe and GiveSendGo expose a concerning divide between ‘Big Tech’ and ‘Alt‐Tech’ platforms regarding what harms they are willing to risk, and the ideological rationales through which these determinations are made. There remain relatively few regulatory safeguards guiding such impactful strategic choices, leaving crowdfunding platforms susceptible to weaponization. With Alt‐Tech platforms aspiring to build an ‘alternative internet’, this paper highlights the urgent need to explore digital constitutionalism in the crowdfunding space, establishing firmer boundaries to better mitigate fundraising platforms becoming complicit in catastrophic harms.

As a tool of media accountability, reader representation refers to a system in which questions and complaints from readers are evaluated and mistakes are corrected. The practice of reader representation, which aims to increase the quality of the newspaper and gain the trust of the reader, is important for both the news organization and the reader. While on the one hand the reader's representative is the voice of the readers and examines the complaints and recommendations, on the other hand, the representative guides the journalists and newspaper management to work within the framework of ethical principles. Although reader representatives do not have any authority, they convey their views in the newspaper to correct wrong or distorted practices in the newspaper. As an independent party, they act as an information channel between the reader and the newspaper in solving problems. On the other hand, the orientation of journalism to digital media and the active position of the reader necessitated the reconsideration of reader representation. In the digital age, it is frequently emphasized that the views of reader representatives have lost their function and are replaced by readers. The purpose of this study is to provide a perspective on the functioning and the future of reader representation in the digital age. Within this context, people who worked or continue to work as a reader representative in Turkey were interviewed to identify the function and effectiveness of reader representation in the new media environment in Turkey. In the study, it is reported that strengthening and disseminating the practice of reader representation in Turkey can make a positive difference in news organizations. It is also emphasized that the need for representation is increasing in the new media/social media environment where false and fake news are circulating.
