Coastal zones across the world are often listed as protected areas as a result of their sensitive ecosystems and frequent social uses. One category of protected area that allows for protection and use is a geopark. A geopark combines geological heritage conservation with sustainable development and must include meaningful geological characteristics, and scientific content. Geoparks can stimulate the coastal economy through the appreciation of the heritage and development of sustainable tourism, along with environmental protection and interpretation. There are geoparks on islands and coastal areas in many continents. Fernando de Noronha archipelago (Brazil), has relevant geodiversity and the potential to join the Global Geoparks Network (GGN). For the creation of a geopark, it is important to acknowledge its geological heritage and relevance. This has already been done in Fernando de Noronha by the Geological Service of Brazil (CPRM), through the identification of the geosites in the island. The goal of this case study is to present actions that have been carried out and that may help on the report development for the proposed Geopark, as well as present the benefits that a geopark can bring to a coastal area. Opportunities for improving the economy with geoproducts and geofood are presented.

Em Fernando de Noronha (PE) há facilidade na observação de animais como as tartarugas, golfinhos, tubarões, aves e peixes. Deste modo, este estudo de caso tem como objetivo apresentar os resultados de uma pesquisa de percepção dos visitantes do arquipélago de Fernando de Noronha. A pesquisa foi realizada baseando-se no questionário do projeto intitulado “Turismo, Manejo de Uso Público e a Percepção dos Visitantes: Coleta de Dados e Pesquisa em Áreas Protegidas” que foi realizado também em outras Unidades de Conservação brasileiras. O questionário utilizado foi adaptado para a realidade brasileira e baseia-se nos aplicados pelo Serviço Florestal Americano em Florestas Nacionais dos Estados Unidos que participam do Programa NVUM – National Visitor Use Monitoring. No arquipélago a pesquisa foi realizada em 2016 e foram coletados 104 questionários utilizando um tablete o software Droid Survey. A metodologia englobou visitas in loco, consulta à bibliografia pertinente e a coleta de dados propriamente dita. O Projeto TAMAR e o Projeto Golfinho Rotador desenvolvem atividades que propiciam a observação de animais. Dos entrevistados, 68% visitaram o local pela primeira vez e 80% realizaram a atividade de observação de animais.

Ecotourism has relation with conservation of biodiversity which recently shows bad condition on the marine ecosystem. This research analyzed how the role of government compared to the private sector was conducted in Pramuka and Air Island based on the type of ecological zone and further conformity of ecotourism was assessed based on biodiversity of living organisms in both islands. Line intercept transect method was used in this study stretched along the parallel 85 m into the coastline with three replications over 25 m. Combination of 100 m Line intercept transect method and 20 m diameter of circular transect method inside were used to measure identify plants. Bird species was observed by the distance sampling point count method. Interview with local people surrounding islands was also conducted to get the information on anthropogenic activities.
