Tailoring Body Mass Index for Prediction of Obesity in Young Adults: A Multi-Centric Study on MBBS Students of Southeast India

Abstract: Introduction: Body mass index (BMI) has been used for a long period as a surrogative measure for obesity. But BMI does not differentiate between fat and nonfat tissue (blood, bone, and muscle) due to which it is not considered accurate anymore. But since BMI is easier to estimate and used widely for assessment of obesity, it is better if it is re-standardized according to the body fat percentage (BFP) of a specific population, community, and their ethnicity. Objective: To estimate and propose the BM… Show more

“…The measurement of BMI as an obesity predictor, although widely used, has been questioned on many occasions since it does not differentiate between fatty and non-fatty tissues (muscle, bone, etc.) [ 23 ]. Therefore, BMI measurement might be a poor approach to assess obesity in athletes whose body weight is highly influenced by muscle mass but not in middle-aged women with normal physical activity [ 23 ].…”

“…[ 23 ]. Therefore, BMI measurement might be a poor approach to assess obesity in athletes whose body weight is highly influenced by muscle mass but not in middle-aged women with normal physical activity [ 23 ]. Nevertheless, in this study, in addition to BMI measurement, we decided to measure other factors such as waist circumference and fat and lean mass percentage, all of which were increased in the group of women with dysglycemia.…”

“…Our finding might underline that body fat affects muscle strength and endurance performance. Body fat was mostly found in women, as reported in several studies conducted in India [33,34], China [35], Indonesia [36], and Europe [37]. A hypothesis explained that the body fat in muscles might immediately restrict blood perfusion, slowing the metabolism needed for muscle contraction.…”

“…Obesity and overweight prevalence have skyrocketed in recent years, reaching epidemic proportions with the incidence rate more than doubling since 1980 (11). Obesity was thought to be an issue only in advanced countries, but it is currently highly prevalent in developing countries, particularly in urban areas (12).…”
