Tailored wettability of plasma polymers made of C–F, C–H, and N–H

Abstract: New trends toward green technologies and broad utilization of polymers have led to intense research on surfaces with controlled wettability. This study demonstrates an easy method to control the wettability (estimated by static water contact angle [WCA]) of a polymer surface by introducing a proper ratio of C–F, C–H, and N–H bonds. The preparation method combines magnetron sputtering from a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) target and plasma‐enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) from a nitrogen/acetylene mix… Show more

“…The wettability of PTFE can also be tailored upon the sputter-deposition of the thin polymer films resembling PTFE. Prysiazhnyi et al [ 33 ] performed sputtering of the PTFE substrate using magnetized capacitively coupled RF plasma of discharge power 50 W and a frequency of 13.56 MHz operating at the pressure of 1.5 Pa. The treatment time was half an hour.…”

“…All elemental spectra were calibrated using the standard binding energy of carbon, which is equal to 292.0 eV (CF 2 ) according to the results of previous studies. , Tables and summarize the chemical compositions and positions of the sub-peaks corresponding to specific bonds of the ZnO–PPFC nanocomposite thin films fabricated at various ZnO concentrations in the hybrid targets. The best known PTFE consists of a quasicrystal structure with linear chains in which the molecular bonds of −[−CF 2 –CF 2 −] n - are highly ordered.…”

“…Several attempts have been reported in the literature using DBD plasma to improve the wettability of polymeric surfaces, since it does not deteriorate and can modify the treated surface [ 17 , 23 , 25 , 26 , 27 ]. The authors justify that the increase in wettability in polymeric materials is directly associated with the incorporation of functional groups such as C–O, C=O, and O–C–O [ 11 , 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 ]. The incorporated functional groups were verified, by the authors, using the XPS or FTIR techniques, with the associated reduction of the peak of the C–C and C–H bonds [ 5 , 12 , 32 ].…”
